I think that on the surface the novel is quite clearly a satire about government about the excesses and inefficiencies of bureaucracies, about the disparities in class as well. The distances between the developed and underdeveloped parts of India. I found the novel a bit daunting at first, I must admit, but I was intrigued almost from the moment I stepped into that car with Agastya and Dhrubo in the opening pages of the book. I think part of what threw me off initially was coming to terms with the fact that this is not a story in which action really moves large portions of the plot. I think in a sense that is probably what is so interesting about it, like August you kind of become trapped in time, sucked into Madna. I think it's a great novel in the tradition of coming of age tales. Agastya faces a crisis of identity through the course of the book. He wonders why he has taken this job, why he is here, etc. Although you don't really get a resounding answer to whether he has matured fully as a character by the end of the novel, I do believe there are some profound developments along the way, both in the final encounter with Sathe and in the closing images of the book with August traveling by train to meet his father I think one is left with a profound sense of promise.

I loved "Like Water For Chocolate", I read it all in one day ^^ It's about a forbidden romance and it's full of small metaphors, mostly connected with food

I think it might be a long book... that doesn't work well for me :( The last long book I read (& finished) was A House for Mr Biswas.

Hi Bhabhs! I saw th film memoirs of a geisha. it was amazing. very feminine, and with deep emotions. r would never have appreciated it so i saw it alone, when he was at work. it's the kind of film that stays with you. Another in its league and a bit similar is Farewell My Concubine. brilliant! So u read the book, eh?
