Fenchurch

I'm a long time SF&F fan and a computer geek lucky enough to be married to another of my kind... which means we have a whole lot of a books and a whole lot of computers.

My main online hangout has been Livejournal for several years now, and while I'm still trying to remember to update things here, I've actually gotten sucked into a... more »

Wonderful! Yes, at its core it is simply a list of classic British foods... but the comments by author Andrew Wheeler are witty and insightful, giving a bit of a peek into the cultural significance behind the food that's been listed. I finished this book hungry for haggis and shepherd's pie and trifle, and wanting to try a score of dishes and treats I'd never even heard of before!

Best of all, recipes are provided in the back of the book for a number of the dishes listed. I can't wait to give them a try!

A somewhat difficult book to read, but that may have been more an effect of the edition rather than the source material (the one I have was translated from Russian to French and then from French to English -- I really need to try finding a straight translation). It scores major points, though, for its impact on literature, since the book's influences can be seen in many mid-20th century works of dystopia fiction.
I originally read this for my Science Fiction As Literature class back in college, although it was my choice. I'd been curious about it for years, knowing it was one of the inspirations for George Orwell's 1984. As with most Russian literature, it's a fairly dry read... not helped by the fact that none of the characters have names and are referred to by an alphanumeric designation (and believe me, it made for a rather convoluted oral presentation when I had to read my review in class).

Really enjoyed this one, but I'm a bit flummoxed as to the intended audience. It's being marketed to the Young Adult sector and that probably works, but it's definitely skewed to the older end of that group. Overall, it's a fun read and quite silly, but with excellent pacing.
