I like historical fiction, dark humor, and books that bend your mind like an M.C. Escher painting.

Hm. I really liked East of Eden, even though it's a bit blowsy and overwrought, because I find the character of Cathy intriguing. (Also the servant, Hop Sing, I think his name is.) After awhile, Adam bores me, and some of the conflict between the sons gets to be a bit much, but it swept me along anyway. I may not be a good person to judge by, though, because I find Dickens easy to read and enjoyable and a lot of people I know dislike him intensely.

I get a lot of books as advance reader's copies because my husband works at a bookstore; that's how I got The Year of Living Biblically. I've heard the author speak on NPR and I found the book amusing, but not especially profound. I'm even more interested in the book version of Blogging the Bible (I've read most of the blog posts); I need to remember to look for it the next time I go to the library.

Hi, I'm lawless from LJ, here to friend you. I've only started and have only done books I've already read. I'll have to check your shelf out.

Ooh! I love "East of Eden", even though it's a sprawling kind of book. And I'd be interested on your take on "Year Living Biblically". I read an advance reader's copy of that and had heard the author talk about his journey on NPR while he was in the midst of it.
