Well, I'm never one to try and convert someone! Although, I know friends would say otherwise.I have to admit, I know nothing of T. Goodkind's politics. He can get preachy, but not in a "This is the only way to think" kind of way. One drawback to his style of writing, and it is GINORMOUS series, is that it seems the beginning of each book relives everything that happened in all of the books prior. Almost seems as if someone could pick up anywhere in the series and know what was going on.There is a healthy amount of magic, but to me it feels more scientific in nature, all the spells are used for a reason, not just "Poof! You're a toad", type of magic.Anyway, I found it incredibly enjoyable. Now that the whole series is published, if you do choose to attempt it, at least you won't go through the pain of waiting for the next book to surface. It was agony! That's how much I loved this series. The leather clad extremely beautiful and vicious Mord Sith, femme fatal torture artists, helped a little too ;)
Not a problem. He was being a dick. No call for that.
Will do. I'm actually starting my challenge tonight or tomorrow. Ooo, this is gonna be fun.
Ha! Another Nanoer! Same here - Nano will make things harder, but it's a short book and I should be fine.As it turns out, I'm writing a hard sci-fi novel set on earth with no space travel. :)Hope that your novel is on track - I was happy to get just over 2300 words yesterday.Talk later.Travis
Thanks! I've started "Brave New World", which I can't believe that I'd missed! It was Nov 1st yesterday in New Zealand, so it sounds like I started early! :)I'm happy to do reviews, since I keep a review blog outside of shelfari. If I LOVE a book, it goes into my favorites list as well. Thanks for the note - much appreciated.I'll have to poke in on your thread and see how your own reading is going.Talk again soon.Travis
You know, I originally planned to start 12/1 because of WoT but when I input my list onto the site, I mistakenly showed a start date of 11/1. When I realized this morning what I had done, I decided to just jump right in whether I was done with WoT or not -- I'm now 1/2 way through The Time Machine which I started this morning.
Hey no problem! Well even if you have a few things you were disappointed about, i would love your involvement. I don't think groups should be 100% fans who love them or 100% fans who hate them.. a mix of different critiques is welcome in my opinion. Your call though, I'm not sure how critical you might get =).How is it you have the time to read so many books a month?!
I just wanted to thank you for dreaming up the Science Fiction Reading Challenge! I'm having fun putting my list together....And I just checked out your livejournal about the November novel and I too am having grave doubts about my success completing it! Oh well, I'm sure to learn stuff trying it -- like REALLY appreciating those science fiction authors.
I've got most of my books selected but have not yet bought them. I think I will be starting as of December 1 -- Book 12 of Wheel of Time just arrived today and I'd like to finish that before moving on to my SF reading.I'll post what I've come up with for the challenge so far in the next day or two.
I am embarassed to say that i have limited "series stamina". I plowed straight through Phedre's books, but each story was an amazing adventure. Finally, it reached a sort of conclusion, and I think my brain was like "no, thanks. Let's read something else for a while." Even a bad Terre D'Ange book is better than - what? - 70% of most published fantasy. It also helped that I had two long flights (from Wisconsin to N California) when I was reading books 2 and 3 of Phedre's series. Nothing like five hours of forced sitting to make me read insane-o quickly.I don't have a livejournal page, but after reading yours, it made me want to. Very stream-of-consciousness (if that's the right term, which i don't think it is), very matter-of-fact. Not sure if I would write enough in it to make it worthwhile. If I ever start one, I'll let you know.
Thanks for the note on I, Robot, You always seem to give full notes and i really appreciate it.
Thanks anyway.
Hey, thanks for the McKillip overview. As to why I was disappointed in Forests of Serre- I didn't like that the wizard(forgot his name but he was my favorite character) ended up turning dark on them and I thought that the whole plot about him becoming the beast just turned the story around- and not in a good way. Also the love story between the princess and the prince didn't move me at all, because the prince wasn't even *himself* until the last few chapters. And the whole battle/chase was just very convoluted and un-exciting to me. The writing was gorgeous though, I'll give it that.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks for your recommendation for Dune! Don't worry- I'm used to long desert trips... (Lightning Key, Slagbod's Gold)
I loved his writing style. Writing about strong women in a lyrical style, and he is a very creative thinker.Sabriel was very difficult to get into--it took about 30-40 pages, but once I was involved it was hard to put down. My favorite was Lirael (I love animals, and the disreputable dog was clever and loyal--reminiscent of Ash in Deerskin). If you read them, let me know what you think.
Thanks for your help!
Are the below mentioned books sort of like Piers Anthonys' series about Death, God, Time, etc? Because I LOVED those. Downloaded Elantris and will see how it goes. So sad to be almost done with all three of the Mistborn books. I'll miss the characters. :( I started to download the Curse of Chalion, though. I'm excited to try new authors! I found Brandon Sanderson totally by accident. :)
The style of writing is appealing to me so it's hard to pin-point what about the books, exactly, I like. As I write that I realize that I can (hahaha) point out two things that I find interesting and engaging: the first are the powers that people have in this book (they swallow certain metals and gain different strengths from that) and the second is the cohesiveness of the characters as they work together. Even though I like books with gray areas, I guess I've learned (from reading these books) that I also like to know that not all the characters are evil and will turn on eachother. I'll pick up Elantris after I'm done reading the third book (just started it tonight!) of Mistborn.
