Just happy to be surrounded by people who love books. And thankful for my sweetie who has repeatedly given me books despite my ever increasing reading backlog. Next life = silverfish.

Thanks for bringing my attention to it, Peter. I think I've heard of them before but I'm not aware they have translations. What I'm hoping is for Manila bookstores to stock up on these small presses. I'm not sure if they already do, but I want to see publications from these quality publishers. Other than NYRB, the ‘indie’ imprints that I want on the shelves include New Directions, Dalkey Archive Press, David R. Godine, and Archipelago Books.

Peter- you have an excellent shelf. i haven't looked at all of it yet but I already have some comments and questions, if you don't mind. we have a lot of common favorites: John Irving and Cormac McCarthy novels, Ghost Story by Straub. I see The Unconsoled on your shelf with a high rating. Have you read The Remains of the Day? I am a big Ishiguro fan. Michel Faber: I see you loved The Crimson Petal and the White, like i did. I see you have his Under The Skin on your shelf but with no rating. Have you read it? I think it is excellent and very disturbing and very different from Crimson Petal. It has a fascinating lead character. A couple of other questions and i will leave you alone. I also see The Descent and Memoirs of a Geisha on your shelf with no ratings. have you read those? They are two of my favorites. I will add some themes i am attracted to: end-of-the-world-books: if you haven't read Swan Song by McCammon, Cell by Stephen King, The Descent by Long, World War Z by Brooks- give them a chance. Time shifting romance like the novel, The Time Traveler's Wife (I haven't seen the movie and am afraid to. it is such a strange and unique story and sounds hard to do and easy to mess up and it has the dreaded Rachel McAdams in it who i will never forgive for the horrible movie, The Notebook)., and the movie, Somewhere in Time. Existential themes like the excellent novel and movie, Revolutionary Road. I gave both a 10 (5 0n the Shelfari rating system- the highest rating) I also like body snatching- where someone you know or love is taken over by something. it has been done a lot but never very well. never enough subtlety. I guess the old 50's movie The Invasion of the Body Snatchers was the most effective I have come across. if you have any suggestions of books or movies with that theme it would be appreciated. ok I will let you go. thank you for listening. -Julie

Yes, Peter. I like the authors featured in NYRB. Most are in my wish list. I own only 3 of them. My favorite cover is the one in Moravagine by Blaise Cendrars.
