I was raised by two readers. My Mom read. My father collected. They still do.

And now I'm married to a life-long reader and collector.

Hi Eleanor! Well Poemcrazy isn't so much a "how to" as a book of writing prompts, which I found lovely and helpful (and which is what I loved about Goldberg's EARLIER books, but not her later ones). I recently read Shelly Lowenkopf's "The Fiction Writer's Handbook" which I thought of as a series of editing prompts, and is quite interesting as well (though very different from the other books). I'll have a review of that one up soon. What about you? Do you have favourite books about writing?

    Hello Eleanor.
from accross the pond in England.

I agree with you - reading is definitely better than crack!

I see how much you enjoyed 'Before I go to Sleep' by S.J Watson. It's a great debut novel.

I’m searching for someone like you who appreciates the more original and interesting fiction that might be interested in trying out my novel trilogy "The DEAD LOOP". It is easy to read, emotive and a unique psychological thriller mystery about a man that dies every single day but has no idea why.

My first Shelfari reader wrote on Amazon US: ‘one of the most unique and original story plots that I have read in quite a long time... There is just something about the idea and the writing combined that from the very first few pages grabs you by the hand and tugs you along to see what comes next and fires your imagination to begin trying to figure out why it is happening.’

Part 1 on Kindle is only $1.25. It should also be on most formats such as Nook, Kobo and Apple too.

If it intrigues you at all and want to check it out, I would very much appreciate any feedback.
I promise you that you won’t regret it!

    Best wishes,
    Jason

Complete Trilogy edition (if you’re feeling bold!)

I do think the $100 for the McSweeney's book club is worth it. Although there are a few clunkers, as you say, mostly I am amazed by the books and also it seems that they often throw in extra books. Actually I quit subscribing to the quarterly because I found I wasnt reading it.

Through some diabolical glitch at Shelfari I ended up with TWO accounts and could only sign in to the newly created one. So I've had to transfer all of my books and, more or less, start from scratch. In the process I've also lost all of my "friends" and "followers". I've tried to get Shelfari to correct the situation to no avail. They keep referring me to Amazon and the Amazon "help" people claim never to have heard of Shelfari. Hope you'll continue to "follow" me at my new location. Gunter

    Hi!
I thought you'd be interested to know that "STRETCH: Coming of Age in Post-War Germany", the sequel to "Weeds Like Us" has just been published! You can find details on my website:www.weedslikeus.com as well as on amazon.com and bn.com. Happy reading! (Oh, by the way, barring the unforeseen, a German-language version of my first book "Weeds Like Us" will be published in Hamburg in Spring 2011.) Best holiday wishes! Gunter

You didn't rate Bohjalian's Midwives as well as I did. Did you like it well enough to give him another chance.

I've collected a few other novels of his, partly because he is from New Hampshire. So far, I went on to read Double Bind, which I enjoyed except for the "shaggy dog" ending. Sort of a psychological thriller about a male character obsessed with family linkages to people who may be the models for the Great Gatsby and in the process gets further entranced with the mysteries of a young woman who was assaulted.

    Hi Eleanor,

Tried to send a private message but it bounced back. Glad to be your friend. I always try to read every book I can find about those who lived through the war in Germany. I'd be interested to hear what your mother says. Some of my father's ancestors came from Bavaria and his father was born in England.

My father fought in the Pacific during WWII in New Guinea and the invasion of the Philippines.

Have had an interesting life especially growing up in the military. I went to 14 schools in 12 years. We've been in NC now since '67 so I'm a Tar Heel now.

Look forward to perusing your shelf, Judy

It's so cool to hear that you're checking out my blog! I hope you enjoy. :) I've been just getting into "food" books over the past year or so, but have fallen for them hard core. I love food writing! I'm trying to catch up with classics (like M. F. K. Fisher) and also trying to stay current with the new books (I loved "A Homemade Life" by Molly Wizenburg). It's been fun connecting with you here and on Twitter - I look forward to more book and food chat! :)

Hi Eleanor- I am soooo sorry I overlooked your message entirely- I see that you wrote it a couple of weeks ago- I haven't spent much time on Shelfari lately- I have been caught up in the Facebook craze. I think for the BBD group you have to get one of the group admins to invite you- you have to write them a note and they will say nay or yeah- I believe Rob and Suze were admins when I joined. As for indie bookstores I don't travel widely outside of my part of the state- so I can't help much...I hope this finds you well and you have a nice Mother's Day. Keep in Touch. Jason
