Having been a soldier, artist, student, medic, musician, activist in Baghdad, the author of this book has a really exciting outlook on the current political situation in Iraq. But it's not what you think! He doesn't really delve too deeply into the politics of it. He explores what few have had the guts to do: the human experience. With a sensitive eye but an aggressive pen, Paul shares his conflicted feelings and what it seems to mean to be an Iraqi artist living in exile.
His poetry is stunning. He has an amazing grasp of the language. Which surprised me, actually, because I noted that much of this poetry was translated. He is also interesting because he is from a minority group in Iraq and not Muslim so his voice has really NOT been heard.
I HIGHLY recommend this book for those who are on either side of the political debate of the war. And I also recommend it for those who are simply interested in the human experience and the true nature and ultimate power of the human spirit to survive and excel in the face of the worst scenarios
