“Rhythms of Grace is a gritty new book from the popular author Marilynn Griffith who has one of the fastest growing African American reading audiences. There are several themes in the novel that are compelling that I would like to share with you that I think would be of particular interest to your readership.
The protagonist, Grace Okoye, is a promising young dancer when her career was cut short by a brutal assault that left her scarred for life. Twenty years later, when her past gets in the way of her happiness, she heeds the invitation of her dance instructor and returns home to help hurting children and rediscover the rhythms of grace. Grace’s broken past and how she overcomes the many emotional obstacles through her faith in God is truly inspiring. Interestingly, many psychologists and counselors recommend that when someone goes through a traumatic event and are in the healing process that it is helpful to give back to others who are less fortunate through community service.
Griffith keeps the reader interested by throwing in a romantic plot twist with the character Brian who Grace doesn’t expect to meet when she returns home, but they seem to have everything in common except one very important thing—faith. She’s finally found the love of her life, but clearly faith is noticeably absent in Brian’s life. Now she is left to wonder if she should choose him or God. In reality, this is a common dilemma many couples face as our society becomes more secular and diverse in its religious choices within communities.
