I am a 30-something mother of 3 boys and I teach elementary art. I am a book addict as well! I like historical fiction, literary fiction, YA and adult fantasy, memoirs, and more. I really like reading fiction where the main character is an artist or there is some art related theme in the book. I own most of the books shown on my shelf and... more »

It was a quick read but I still hate who she writes all of her characters as so willfully stupid. They make decisions that no person would ever make even at their weakest moments - it makes me respect the characters much less. I do enjoy her breezy writing style however and at least the women in this book weren't Becky Bloomwood-level dumb. That was refreshing.

These are just a few of the plot lines running through this fast-paced novel. Maybe this wasn't the right book for me to read for my first Crichton story. I can definitely see that it was very well researched but felt that the plot lines were a little disjointed. I still want to read some of his better known works.

Hi. I love reading and have done since I was very young. I remember as a child being allowed to read for half an hour before I went to bed and I've been hooked ever since. I enjoy reading both fiction and non-fiction and in fact for a very long time would only really read non-fiction; shame it...

Songs of Willow Frost: A Novel

What starts as an orphan's search for his mother rapidly turns into an exploration of social mores, racism, and women's rights in the Roaring 20s. This compelling novel seems at first like a crossover YA novel with its young narrator, but the subject matter places it firmly in the adult genre.

    The Rosie Project: A Novel

Don Tillman, Professor of Genetics, is an odd duck. Don Tillman, Professor of Genetics, is an odd duck. He says "“I am thirty-nine years old; single, intelligent, fit, in excellent health and I have a relatively high status and above-average income as an associate professor. Logically, I should be attractive to a wide range of women. In the animal kingdom, I would succeed in reproducing. However, there is something about me that women find unappealing...."

Using his logical superpowers and keen academic mind, he begins The Wife Project, creating a lengthy research questionnaire he presents to women in order to find the Perfect Wife--a non-smoking, non-drinking, highly educated, well-organized, logical and unemotional woman. He hasn't counted on meeting Rosie...a smoking, drinking, emotional barmaid who enlists his help to find her real dad.

This story was a poignant delight, hooking me in the first paragraph and keeping me laughing and engaged while at the same time allowing me to feel the deeper sadness of Don's life. A highly recommended read.

A sample from the speed dating chapter of the story:
‘I've sequenced the questions for maximum speed of elimination,’ I explained. ‘I believe I can eliminate most women in less than forty seconds. Then you can choose the topic of discussion for the remaining time.’
‘But then it won’t matter,’ said Frances. ‘I’ll have been eliminated.’
‘Only as a potential partner. We may still be able to have an interesting discussion.’
    ‘But I’ll have been eliminated.’
    I nodded. ‘Do you smoke?’
    ‘Occasionally,’ she said.
    I put the questionnaire away.
‘Excellent.’ I was pleased that my question sequencing was working so well. We could have wasted time talking about ice-cream flavours and make-up only to find that she smoked. Needless to say, smoking was not negotiable. ‘No more questions. What would you like to discuss?’

Interesting tidbit: when we were getting divorced, we had to make a list of all of our joint possession, place a dollar value on them that we both agreed upon. We then flipped a coin, with the winner getting to pick to first item on the list. It then went back and forth, and when we were finished our total dollar amounts had to be equal. Since they weren't we had to barter with each other until they were. Doesn't that sound like Don in your book?

I'm so glad I found my normal, fun, loving (second) husband.
