As a former teacher I was a little leery about the skipping of kinder, especially for a boy, who won't then be chosen for sports teams. And socially, it's awkward. They may regret it down the line, but for now he's doing OK. Denton started to play the dummy, too, but he doesn't anymore. I live in San Antonio where there is a school which is specifically for precocious kids, but they keep them where they would otherwise be - they're just all really bright, so the curriculum is accelerated. Two draw-backs -- there wasn't room for him in his grade and there's tuition. Maybe there's a similar school where you are? But what a challenge for her teachers and you, too.

I wrote up a list of some books which are at least fourth grade level. The trick is whether the subject level might be a little mature or scary to her, but I guess if she's reading Tolkien, maybe that's not a concern. There's a series by Margaret Peterson Haddix called The Shadow Children. The premise is that there are lots of children who exist outside of the law because only two pregnancies per couple are allowed. The first one is called Among the Hidden and it's the only one I've read. She wrote another book outside the series called Running Out of Time, which is about a society of people who are part of an experiment on how the Pioneers, say, lived without advanced medicine. It's very good and written in a suspenseful way. E.L. Konigsburg writes excellent books for the upper elementary school kid and Andrew Clements also has some thought-provoking titles. There's a book called Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher about a class who ends up without a substitute teacher for the day and decides to keep it that way. It's serious rather than silly. A good version of the Arabian Nights would be excellent for her. Christopher Paul Curtis is another good author, but he also writes for high schoolers, so you have to make sure of the level - because of language and sex. Linda Sue Park and the two Pecks, Richard and Robert Newton are also among my favorites. I see you have read The Day No Pigs Would Die, but R.N. also wrote his Soup series for upper grade school readers and Richard has penned Ghosts I Have Been and The Ghost Belonged to Me, two novels which go far beyond the typical ghost story to tell about the sinking of the Titanic and other historical events, but geared to entertain righteously as well. Williwaw, by Tom Bodett (the same one from the advertisements for Motel 6 Hotels) was surprisingly good. And there's Linda Sue Park who writes about Korea and puts the reader into far away places and times. I see you have read the Julie of the Wolves trio - aren't they great?! That's a start. Good luck.

Has she read the Rick Riordan series starting with The Lightning Thief? http://www.rickriordan.com/children.htm His books are educational in that they talk about the ancient Greek and Roman gods, yet thrilling and full of adventure. Your daughter is truly amazing if she is reading Lord of the Ring in 2nd grade!! My grandson is 8 and in 4th grade, having been pushed ahead a year, and he loves to read also, but I doubt he would pick up LOTR! Wow! You have your work cut out for you. I'll try to think of other books she might like.

I was relieved to see your post and realize I was not the only one having problems, even if we were in the minority. After I found my list by scrolling through all the discussions, I tried the search feature again and THEN it worked. Haven't tried it today.

I haven't read MAGIC STUDY yet, but I read POISON STUDY (the first in the series). MAGIC STUDY is book 2 and FIRE STUDY is book 3. All three books are now available through MIRA books, and no longer LUNA (LUNA dropped the series, or rather pushed it over to MIRA. MIRA has since re-released the first two books).

I haven't heard of DRAGON CHAMPION, but when I googled it looked awesome!

As for reviewing *sigh* I know. But, hey, it was worth the shot!

Hay! I noticed I have some of the books you want on my shelf! Go through it (and thegildedpen's) and let me know if you see something you like. I think I still have at least half of the ones you want (that are on my shelf) and I can send them down to you. Any that are on thegildedpen's page let me know. If I've reviewed them I can send them your way (if I haven't donated them yet) and If I haven't I can read them THEN send them your way (unless of course you'd like to become one of my reviewers *wink-wink*
