In possession of an Asian Studies degree, working towards another in Archaeology, dabbling in astronomy and not sure where exactly I am going. A skeptic at heart but a sucker for ancient mythology. My writing is lost and stuck in a rut. I could really use a creative kick in the butt. A passion for all things mah jongg, one bag packing, daibutsu,... more »

I really loved this version of "Beauty and the Beast". It's told from the Beast's perspective, and I found that highly interesting after reading Robin McKinley's two books "Beauty" and "Rose Daughter." Not only a great read, but an easy one too!

I heard about the animated movie when it first came out in Japan, and before I saw it, I thought it would be prudent to read the book. What I didn't know at the time was that this book would quickly become of of my favorite books! Diana Wynne Jones surely knows how to write magic. "Howl's Moving Castle" follows the story of Sophie, the eldest daughter in her family, and therefore, the most likely to do nothing with her life. Enter Howl, a masterful wizard, lady killer, and reported heart eater, Calcifer, a demon, and let's not forget Micheal, Howl's assistant! As Sophie resigns herself to her fate, she decides to make Howl, Calcifer, and Micheal's lives a pain while she is at it. If you like this book, you might want to try "Castle in the Air" and kind of - sort of sequel to "Howl's Moving Castle"! Note to Girls: If you are a girl, and you are skeptical about reading this book, I only have two words for you: Rugby Howl

For some reason, when I saw this on the book shelf in the store in the U.S., despite my absolute LOVE for Howl's Moving Castle, I never had the inclination to pick it up. I wish I could go back in time and kick myself. On a whim I picked it up in a Japanese books store because I was bored, and I wanted something new and interesting. I found it!

This book is actually two books in one Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant. Diana Wynne Jones really knows how to pull me in. Her characters are interesting and I have fun wishing that I could just hit them upside the head when they do something stupid - which is more often than not. Her writing style is playful and witty. Giver her a chance and I think you will agree!

If you liked this book, then I suggest that you check out the other books in the Chrestomanci series, as well as Howl's Moving Castle.
