In possession of an Asian Studies degree, working towards another in Archaeology, dabbling in astronomy and not sure where exactly I am going. A skeptic at heart but a sucker for ancient mythology. My writing is lost and stuck in a rut. I could really use a creative kick in the butt. A passion for all things mah jongg, one bag packing, daibutsu,... more »

Definitely my favorite volume so far! The plot is nice and thick (err ...). One more volume to go.

The plot of this was much more interesting than the first. I feel like I understand Shiiba more, but I understand less of Shiiba and Munechika's relationship.

I could hardly put the book down. I really want there to be more Mercy in the future, and I really want Patricia Briggs to help Samuel - oh poor Samuel. Hope that the paperback comes out soon so I can own it and read it over and over again.

I liked it. I learned way more about the Japanese police force than I'd ever care to, but the the overall story it good. Can't wait to read the next three volumes.

A very twisty adventure, but Diana Wynne Jones has a knack for sending her readers on a ride. The first few chapters were confusing, but I started putting the pieces together as they were left for me. I LOVED it!

Now if only I could find my own copy.

An interesting story - LOTS of smut, especially towards the end. Not sure what the second and third volumes are going to be about, but we'll see. Anyway, love Takanaga Hinako's work!

This was an interesting story (involving mountain climbing and cooking) with really nice pictures and even a twist! Very nice!

I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad June has stepped up their editing!

  • Hush: An Irish Princess' Tale
    • Rated 4 stars

A breathless, albeit somewhat depressing, tale of an Irish princess stolen away into slavery. I feel this is a great example of Napoli's talent for character development. While the story provides an interesting look into Irish and Norse cultures, the book left me feeling hallow. This book isn't for everyone, and I wouldn't recommend it for your first Napoli book - try Beast instead.

  • The Great God Pan

Simple and bittersweet. A more romantic telling of the mythos of Pan, half God - half Goat, the God of Nature. A very quick and enjoyable read.

  • So You Want to Be a Wizard
    • Rated 3 stars

I picked this book up because whomever wrote the blurb on the back claims that its works "stand between the works of Diana Wynne Jones [Howl's Moving Castle, Crestomanci Series], in its wizardry and spells, and those of Madeleine L'Engle [Wrinkle In Time, Time Series], in its scientific concepts and titanic battles between good and evil."

Sounds good right? That's what I though, but the book was not what the blurb on the back had built it up to be.

That's not to say that it's a bad book. I found some parts of the book very interesting, and I think that it sorta wrapped up well. The characters are enjoyable, but my favorite character was killed off (again). However, the chapters were gruelingly LONG, and it read like a textbook at times - not really developing and painting a scene for the reader to enjoy, but telling you details (boring). I still can't see the comparison between Duane, Jones, and L'Engle.

If I want to continue the story, I'll be checking it out at the library.
