In possession of an Asian Studies degree, working towards another in Archaeology, dabbling in astronomy and not sure where exactly I am going. A skeptic at heart but a sucker for ancient mythology. My writing is lost and stuck in a rut. I could really use a creative kick in the butt. A passion for all things mah jongg, one bag packing, daibutsu,... more »

Edmund is so frustrating, and Fanny is so obliging. I already knew the ending, from seeing the movie, but Austen really draws it out to the very last and had me worrying the whole time. Lots of fun!

Zen En El Arte de Escribir

Ray Bradbury's collection of essays on writing is really inspireing. It's hard to remember that it's about the joy of writing, and writing just for the sake of writing, and writing because otherwise you'll die.

An interesting idea. To be honest I didn't really find the various writers' journals to be all that inspiring, but I did like Benders' tips and exercises - especially chapter 7: fishing for stories, and chapter 8: ten more strategies to use for making journal entries.

In any case, I've been keeping a journal for about a week now, and while I'm not as "artistic" about my entries as this book encourages you to be, I am enjoying it.

Pride and Prejudice was the first Jane Austen book I have ever read. I had to read it in high school, and I remember liking it, but it wasn't until last year - when I picked it up in Japan - that I realized what a stunning book it is. It's also great to have it read to you!

  • How to Prepare Your Curriculum Vitae (How To?series)

I found that the first half of the book was basically useless, unfortunately. There were a few tidbits here and there, but nothing I hadn't already found on various websites. The most useful part of this book was the C.V. examples. That really helped me plan out the layout for my C.V., and showed me different ways of presenting the information.

In short, check the internet first. If you don't find anything useful, see if your local library has this book or check for an ebook on the internet, but I don't recommend a buy.

A cute story. I read it in order to understand Diana Wynne Jones' Fire and Hemlock a little better. The illustrations are very pretty!

I still want to read Pamela Dean's version of this story, though.

    Princess Academy [PRINCESS ACADEMY]

I love the idea of an emergency make-shift princess academy for supposedly "uncouth" mountain girls - hilarious! It was a sweet story, and it's easy to get pulled in and end up reading the whole thing in a single day. I enjoyed it, but the flow of the story seemed a little off at sometimes.

I thought I wrote a review for this already, but it was gone when I came back a few days later. Strange.

Anyway, a great conclusion to this series! I don't think that it could have ended any better.

If you can, read all 4 volumes together. I found they read better without interruption.

I special ordered this book, and I wasn't disappointed. It has a Dalemart Quartet feel, but it has more in common with Hexwood and Fire and Hemlock than you'd think.

The Giants - I really wasn't expecting that! I love how DWJ still has the ability to surprise me.
