  • Torment

    by Stephen R. George

Just a childish story about a young girl who is possessed by a girl of her age who recently died. Kind of exploring the idea of wanting to be someone else but not having financial opportunities.... all in all... don't bother reading it.

And again... a book that could've been way better but it just isn't. I loved the subject, the idea, and even the description of the Grunewald painting from the beginning, but I didn't like the way he built the entire story. All that information about Giles de Rais was very interesting but it seemed like it was just thrown there without any credible connection with the main character. After reading it, I felt almost angry that it wasn't the way I expected to be.

Am I the only one who thinks this book is weak? All say it's gorgeous, but I hardly finished it. It was boring and totally uninteresting. The main character wasn't deep at all, he was just clumsy, and his terrible problems were ridiculous. I felt like the whole book was based on a trivial idea that wasn't even worth writing about.

I didn't like it that much. I was expecting something deep an creepy, but instead I found it plain and almost weak. It didn't capture my attention at all. I read it because I heard it's a "must read" book but I didn't enjoy it.

I always choose Dumas when I want to relax after a difficult book. This one is ok, although I didn't find it that interesting, maybe because I really hate flowers, can't possibly understand the ones who have a passion for them. The plot was ok too, I found the characters a bit too naive and all that perfectly perfect happy ending was a bit far from my tastes. Anyway, it's an easy and relaxing read that anyone should try from time to time.

I really liked it although I wasn't in the mood for such misterious, dark literature. I think the main idea is that the most terrifing thing is to meet your inner self... face to face. The characters were afraid of the golem because they were all vicious and miserable. Instead, the main character, Pernath, is the only one who somehow survives and exceeds his human, mortal state. I guess I'll read it again sometime and try to understand it better.

It was an easy read about love, hate, women and men analysed from different points of view. The author insists a lot on the purpose of women not only in the family, but in the entire society. He is sometimes harsh and unfair when he says that it's only the woman's fault for the degradation of the society and for all the bad things that happen, because she is the one that gives birth to the world. What I really liked was the way he talks about the perfect woman, the creole woman, at the end of the book.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I love the main character for his black humour and his deep feelings, and for the way he laughts at the society and plays games with all those fake people around him. I think that the idea of game is not only reduced at money and bets, because he also plays with his life that means nothing to him without Polina. This woman is the one who throws him in a degradating situation. For him, her presence itself is a matter of luck and the only thing he can do is hope and gamble.

This was an easy read, deep and funny at the same time. It presents two different typologies, the eternal husband and the eternal lover, that are bound by a child who eventually dies after the two begin to have a strange relationship, mostly based on hatred. It is interesting how the characters suffer different changes as like they are trying to become something else than their usual self, but end up the same. You're wondering if they learned something from their terrible experience or if they'll make the same mistakes over and over again.

It was a nice read. I wasn't expecting much from this book but it really caught me. It's not extraordinary, but it's easy to read and it's very realistic. I could even find some facts that we are already facing in today's society. Even if I don't hate children that much, I surely hate iresponsable parents that can't give them a proper education.
