I was born, raised and still live in California. I love to read and my tastes are all over the place. My shelf is definitely incomplete. Jane Austen is my favorite "classics" author. I love a good mystery, courtroom intrigue, travel essays, church books and biographies of people I think sound interesting. Sometimes those people are royalty... more »

So you are reading Vanity Fair isn't that a pretty big book? I saw the movie:-) I have been reading some very random things lately. Nothing that has blown me away. I need a great read, it's been a while since I couldn't put a book down! I got an i-pad for Christmas so I have read a little on it. I am such a dork that when I was reading something on it, I licked my finger to turn the page. hahaha You might have to tutor me on my ipad, so far I only read and play a few games on it. Enjoy that sweet little baby. How long are you going to be there?

Funny how you and your friend often gravitate towards the same books...I even tend to pick up the same book over and over just because of the cover.

Yeah...It's silly when book cover artists don't even get the right color hair for the main characters or don't know what era the book takes places in...and certainly they often don't have a feeling for what the book is about.

It has been fun to look at new books you've read (and books you've read in the past), and I've added several to my to-read list... so thanks for inviting me to be your friend!

In a way I'd like to say that I don't judge a book by its cover, but I have to admit that more and more I do....I think the publishers have gotten very good at creating covers that suggest a type of book -- thriller, cozy mystery, historical romance, family drama, quirky, whatever-- in a very appealing way. I'm sucked in when they remind me of a book that I really liked and/or have really interesting photographs/designs. I work in a library part-time and sometimes I look at some of the older (60s,70s,80s..) books and I think, why did anyone create that cover/who would ever like it? (I still like the plain old covers, by the way.) How about you?

Sounds great. Incidentally, I'm still adding old books to my shelves and I've decided to only review books I'm newly finishing.

It does look like we have a lot of similar interests (as in, I love LOTS of different books), and I'd be happy to be your friend, although I'm not sure what that entails really.

The books of the month (BOTM) that the group is reading are pinned to the top. July’s BOTMwill be The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. The questions will be posted the first of the month.
We are also starting something new. It will be a Long Read consisting of books from the list that are greater than a 1000 pages. The group will be starting with War and Peace by Tolstoy.

    Hi Robin
How are you & how was Amsterdam ?
Did you have a great time? The nearest I've been is Schipol Airport & it's always one of those places we say we'll go to but never quite get there! Shame on us cos it's only just over an hour away by plane.
Anyway hope you had a good time & the European weather didn't spoil it for you.
We're off to FL next week - can't wait to see those blue, sunny skies again. My book club in FL meets on 12 november so I'm trying to read "Eat, Pray, Love" before then.
Have you read it yet ?
    Take care

    Robin,
I am Maddie's husband and I just read some of your comments to Ryan on his Book of Mormon review. My wife and I would like you to know that your responses were well thought out and very effective. I actually teach seminary and I want you to know that even though I get to study the scriptures everyday and teach from them I was very touched by the things you wrote. You have an amazing strength for sharing the gospel in a way that is very powerful. I am grateful for what I learned from the things you shared and the way you shared it. I am pretty sure that Heavenly Father is able to use you to effectively teach the gospel all the time. Anyway, thanks again for what you wrote.

I did enjoy the "book" book. I actually rented the movie and am hoping to watch it this week. I'm such a dork though, because I thought it was fiction. Until the very last letter and I realised they were real people. Then I looked at the book and the author was the same lady who wrote the letters. I also felt very under educated because I didn't recognize any of the books she wanted or talked about:-)

Loved 'The Hiding Place' though it was quite a while ago that I read it. I bought it after hearing her interviewed on television.
Amazing woman. I bought 'The Gentleman's Daughter' as a reference book because I write in the Regency period. I study it and highlight useful information or things that stike me as interesting. I like the humor of the author's voice. It is not something to read for relaxation or in a few sittings.

Hi Robin - sorry I haven't been in touch for ages! We had a really busy time on the farm, my husband then went walking in Austria for a week while I went down to London & then we got back together & spent a lovely week in Scotland - so altho' I've managed to log on a few times I really haven't had a second to even write reviews or talk to anyone - sorry !
How's the weather with you - still hot, sticky & full of ants? Hopefully your reading has improved - you said the books you were reading weren't that enjoyable. I eventually finished "The Moonstone" - don't even attempt it !! It was so long-winded it got to be boring, which was a shame. And the worst of it was that I had to travel from London on the day of my book club, due to arrive back home with at least 2 hours to spare - and all the trains were cancelled due to a fault on the line - I eventually got home hours later when the book club had finished !!
I'm currently reading the latest book by Alexander Mccall Smith - it's called "The Unbearable Lightnessof Scones " - he's my all-time favourite. The book , however is not on the Shelfari database, so I can't tell everyone what I'm reading & it is so good - what a shame.
Hope you're not quite as busy as you were & that you've managed to find the time to read some good books.
    Take care
    Christine
