I've posted a discussion topic on the Vistas group and want you to check it out. Here it is, so you can think about it first :):

Attention Authors Among Us: A Question on Your Characters

How much time do you spend in naming your Characters? What is your inspiration for their names, especially the main characters?

Upon reading Scott Pratt's An Innocent Client, I began to think about this. His character, Erlene, really came to life. She, in my mind, talked and cracked her gum, although I think Scott failed to mention the gum :), like Flo (from the TV show Alice) but looked and walked like Mrs. Al Bundy. Get my drift? The name really "topped" her off for me. I started thinking about characters from other books I've read at that point and decide Gus McCrae (Lonesome Dove) couldn't have had the name 'Woodrow Call' anymore than Call could have had Gus's name. They just didn't "fit" the character.

I just bought the latest Kate Sujak novel. It is hard to slug through at first but warms up. Is that Sharon McCrone book a set of short stories?
I am re-reading Texas Iliad by Steven Hardin. I am writing Alamo stuff right now. Hardin has an excellent artist -- very helpul with period clothing and arms.

Now -- what about music? What songs in Texas in 1836?

    Irene,

I understand what you are going through, I have moved 4 times myself, during the last 6 years. I want to settle down. God help me! What are you going to do with all of those books! I'm putting a few of mine in an auction this weekend to support a local community organization. Gotta make room for MORE! :) Take care. Be careful moving stuff. Boxes of books are heavy!

Oops, sorry about the typos in that note below. It is nearly 3:30 a.m. and I just got in from work. Fatigue sets in and the 'sandman' is calling my name as I type this.

    Goodnight ...

    Hi Irene,

I am reading a new cozy book that is pretty good so far. The autor is Cynthia Baxter and the book is titled Murder Packs A Suitcase.

The main character is a lady named Malllory whom is the mother of two young adult children, and Mallory has recently lost h er husband. She begins a new career when she applies for a job as a writer for a travel magazine. Her first assignment is Orlando Florida, but not the big Disney type themed parks. Of course murder ensues but I don't want to tell you any more beccause I dont' want to give it away. Heck, I just began the book yesterday and am half way finished today.

Anyway, I thought of you because I know you like cozy's and it is fun to find a new author. Cynthia Baxter has another new book coming out before summer 2009.

    Ok, take care,

My chess days are long behind me. Right now, it's a jigsaw puzzle. I set it out for Christmas, thinking the kids would jump on it. They didn't. I started it myself. Can't finish it, can't quit.

Wow, you've been doing some good reading! I've been on a dead run since Nov 1; not much reading to brag about. Well, I did read Chiefs again. Bought a new copy and then passed it on. And -- Anne Perry is one of my all-time favorites. Must admit, I like her Victorian novels better than her WWI stories.

    Cheers,

    Hi Irene,

I see on your shelf that you read and enjoyed Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone books. I was wondering if you got the chance to see the television movies starring Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone? I saw them all and they were good! I wish they would make more.

I'm refering to the group here on Shelfari- Appalachian and Kentucky Authors. Lets do Sins of the Fathers since it's the first in the series. I think it sounds fun and we get to promote "our own" (KY people that is!). What date/ month works best for you? Good luck with the sale at the Artisan Center. I just love Berea and have been several times to the Artisan Fair there - always eat at the Daniel Boone Tavern!

Thanks so much for your kind words about my blog to the Appalachian/Kentucky group. It means a lot to me that you would take time out of your busy schedule to do that. I'm never sure how many people are actually reading what I'm putting out there...but I sure do enjoy being able to share with people in this way. When my Eastern Kentucky Lit class starts this fall I'm sure I will have a lot to share about that as well.

By the way, just finished reading Sins of the Fathers today. Good job! Your Brewster County novels are a pleasant addition to the Mystery/Detective genre and quite a "cozy" little read.

I really enjoying messing around with it. The link is http://readandlead.blogspot.com/. I thought the dog story was funny too. Enjoyed seeing the Pulaski County Library. Spectacular. Now if we can just get a new library for Russell County one of these days!

I love books, movies, tv and live theater. No matter the forum, I become a part of the action. And so, I must be careful because I am greatly affected.
