  • Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness
    • Rated 4 stars

Murray does a good job of finding true humility in Scripture, patterning the will of God in our lives from the life of Christ. Certainly worth reading. I know I myself need a gentle, and straight forward, reminder of the need to be more like Christ in every are of my life. The way humility ties in with so many things I see in my life that I need to work on show my desperate need for more of God in this area.

  • The Grand Weaver: How God Shapes Us Through the Events of Our Lives
    • Rated 5 stars

Ravi Zacharias is a writer I enjoy very much. He brings together in this books the eight "threads" which bring out lives together. If our life is under the control of the Grand Weaver, our lives become things of beauty, even if that takes time and occasionally, or possibly often, looks like a bit of a mess. The eight threads are DNA, Disappointments, your calling, morality, spirituality, will, worship and destiny. I really enjoyed this book, and will have to make sure to read it again some time in the future.

I've included a couple quotes from the book I thought were especially good, though they don't begin to cover the whole of the ideas.

“Because we are all priests before God, there is no such distinction as ‘secular or sacred.’ In fact, the opposite of sacred is not secular; the opposite of sacred is profane. In short, no follower of Christ does secular work. We all have a sacred calling.”

“Jesus does not offer to make bad people good but to make dead people alive.”

  • Revival Praying: An Urgent and Powerful Message for the Family of Christ
    • Rated 4 stars

“The world has lost the power to blush over its vice; the Church has lost her power to weep over it.”

“These days we are spiritually so subnormal that to be just normal (according to the New Testament pattern) seems to make us abnormal.”

These two quotes really sum up a lot of what Ravenhill is trying to get across in his book. The need for prayer is great. What a challenging book for me to read. It made me reconsider the time and effort I spend in prayer. A recommended read, but only if you aren't too afraid of a little conviction!

  • Jesus Mean and Wild: The Unexpected Love of an Untamable God
    • Rated 4 stars

"Jesus shows us a God mean and wild who shocks us be refusing, absolutely, to conform to our sentimental image of him."

That is the idea and theme of this book. It was a good one, though not with any lessons which were particularly new to me. Since a child I have had this view of my Christ. Actually, while reading this book my mind kept going back to "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and the conversation about Aslan between the children and the beavers. "Is he safe" they ask nervously? "Is he safe? He's a lion. 'Course he isn't safe. But he is good." That has alwasy been etched into my mind, and I'm thankful for a book that supports and strengthens this theme of a Jesus who is wild and untamable.

  • Christianity's Dangerous Idea: The Protestant Revolution--A History from the Sixteenth Century to the Twenty-First
    • Rated 5 stars

What a great book. It made me think, got me to see things from a different light. The "dangerous idea" according to McGrath, is the idea that each Christian has the right and ability to interpret Scripture. He looks at how, at the time of the Reformation, that was such a profound idea, and then traces how it has affected Protestantism through the last few hundred years. It really gave me a lot to chew on.

  • The Myth of a Christian Nation: How the Quest for Political Power Is Destroying the Church
    • Rated 4 stars

While I didn't agree with everything Boyd laid out in this book, it did open my eyes to my own thoughts concerning the way my Christianity fits in with my nationalistic pride. "In the world but not of the world" seems to be his theme throughout the book, and this applies not only to the way we act, but to which kingdom we give our devotion. Also, he talks about what it means to say that we are devoted to the Kingdom of God.

  • Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires, the Respect He Desperately Needs
    • Rated 4 stars

“In the ultimate sense, your marriage has nothing to do with your spouse.
It has everything to do with your relationship to Jesus Christ.”
    Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

This is a quote from the book. It was a good one, and a worthy read. It helps a Christian couple see their God-ordained place in marriage, and how to make that marriage work God's way.

  • The Purpose-Driven Life

“I have to say I didn't think much of this book. If you read it quickly and don't pay a lot of attention to the verses, it's okay. For the most part, though, it takes many, many Scriptures out of context and quotes them in translations that make them say what they don't say in the original text. It's unfortunate, because I think the concept is good.

I do think it's fitting that the group "Christian Fiction" has it on their shelf. : )

Wesley's ideas have long been misunderstood, by both those in the Holiness movement and those out of it. Here are Wesley's ideas on Christian perfection, "straight from the horses mouth."
