I am a mother, grandmother and great grandmother and I love to read. My favorite reading material is mysteries but I like to sandwich the mystery books with something light and whimsical.

    Hi,

Gotta post a few books I've read. Took dad to the VA yesterday to get him hooked up with them to get his meds cheap. The internist prescribed a med for his memory - not sure it is helping, but they say it needs 4-6 weeks. The problem is that it costs $311 for 30 days. They gave me more samples until we see him again April 23. At that point he'll either change the med, try something new or refer to a neurologist. Dad is adjusting well though. He does a great job of doing his day to day stuff, but he will occasionally have a "day of confusion", and his long term memory is not good. I'm scheduling eye and dental for him and we have a financial planner working with him. Gotta get to a lawyer next to get his living will and will updated. He loves coming to dinner though, getting out for errands and going to Marcus' (great grandson's) T-ball. Hope all is well with you.

    Hey Jessica,
I enjoyed Sugar Queesn but not as much as I enjoyed Garden Spells. Nice whymsical ready after mysteries. Michael Connelly's books are not series although sometimes he will refer to a character in a previous novel but it isn't confusing so I would say that you should try to read some of his earliest novels about his character, Harry Bosch. No matter where you start, I know if you like detective mysteries, you will love Connelly's books. I am anxious to know if you enjoy them as much as I do. Recently I read Detective by Arthur Hailey. I had read many of his previous books and always admired his writtings as he researches his subject so much that you learn as well as enjoy. Detective was not a new novel and previously, I read Hotel, Airport and others by him. He has to be one of my many favorites but right up there on the top. Fairstein surprised me as being excellant and I will look for more books by this very talented woman. BTW will you be Shelfari friend?

Hi! Soorry for the delay in replying to your note! I did read the Sugar Queen, it was a sweet little book. I didn't like it as much as Garden Spells.. but I thought it was a nice sweet read. Have you finished it? What are your thoughts on it?
I haven't gotten to Michael Connelly yet. I am going to soon though, I love a good mystery. You know, I've picked up a couple of Fairstein books and haven't read them. They all looked good too!
I'm reading House of Illusions now which is a sequel to another book I read for a historical reading challenge, I didn't realize there was a sequel when I read it. So I was left hanging and had to read it for a sense of closure... lol. After that, I'm not sure what I'll read. Maybe Michael Connelly. What book of his should I read first?

Thanks. Linda Fairstein is one of my very favorite authors. F.Y.I. she was the first person in charge of the sex crimes unit in NYC that "Law & Order SVU" is based upon.

Thanks, that's a day lily that De gave me when she split one of hers. I took the picture to show her because it never blooms until she and Phil have left for the summer.

Lol, I'm already waiting for Sugar Queen to come into the library for me.. great minds think alike! I really liked Garden Spells and ~almost~ bought Sugar Queen brand new last weekend at Barnes and Nobles but talked myself out of it in the hopes of maintaining some frugality in the budget.. lol. I love books like that too.
I'm going to get on the library's website this morning and request a Michael Connelly book, it sounds like a series I would like.

You are the second person this week to mention Michael Connelly to me, I haven't read any of his books and am not too familiar with him. I think I need to check his books out, I love mysteries too, especially the ones were I don't guess the ending. What types of mysteries does Connelly write? What is the best one to start with for someone who hasn't read any of his books?
LoL, that is funny about your daughter. What a fabulous job she has, I'm jealous, then again I wouldn't be getting any work done if I worked at a library. I'd be too busy looking at all the books or talking about books to patrons. Working fulltime has cut my reading time in half. I used to average 3-4 books a week, now it's about 1-2 books. I love to read, I'm so glad to meet others that love to read as much as I do! :)

Hello! I am in the exact middle of the book right now and I think it is good and entertaining so far. I have read most of Jodi Picoult's books and although I don't think this is her best (so far), the endings always seem to leave me very satisfied. I do feel like this one is a bit predictable, but I guess I'll find out in about 200 pages!
