My first novel, an alternate Irish history entitled "A Band of Roses," was released in March, 2008. This adventure story is set in a modern Ireland still ruled by kings. I read for both research and relaxation, and I enjoy exploring the wealth of books on other Shelfari members' shelves.

Believe it or not I haven't read The Butcher Boy yet myself but I have seen the movie! The first McCabe novel I read was The Dead School and I loved it not to mention Breakfast On Pluto. I'm sure you'll enjoy his work! I'm pea green with envy that you were just in Ireland! You're so lucky!! I'm very interested in your novel and I wish you the best of luck with it. If you're on Facebook, look me up there as I'm there more often - last name Bode. I look forward to talking to you more. Have a great day!

    Hi Pat,
Sorry I haven't responded for a while my wife has been sick. She is a lung transplant patient (8 years ago) so she has issues related to drugs she takes. Anyway, still reading when I can.

I'm reading "Spiritual Evolution" which makes an scientific argument for spiritual faith. I heard and interview on the radio with the author who is a psychiatrist and professor at Harvard University and he sounded interesting. Usally I only read fiction but this caught my interest.

Going to Long Island and Manhattan this week for work. Going Thursday, back Sunday so at least I'll miss the Allstar Game crowd.

Glad to hear you liked Das Boot. I did to. I see you recomended The Butcher Boy. I'll have to check it out.

Oh you loved Outlander by Diana Gabaldon too! A kindred spirit! She's my favourite author right now and I can't wait for the next book...it takes so long in between finishing her last book and getting her next (although I do have the Lord John books and I haven't read the last two yet) though. I have to get them all again and re-read them. LOVE the adventures of Jamie & Claire!

    Hi Pat,

Your book sounds very interesting and just the sort of thing I'd like to read since I love anything that's set in Ireland! Where is it available?

Hi Pat! That's so great that you picked up Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha! You'll love it, I'm sure! Roddy Doyle does have a brilliant sense of humour and if you like him you'll also love Patrick McCabe...he's even more twisted and wonderful! Start with Breakfast on Pluto if you can or The Dead School. The Butcher Boy is his classic but I haven't even been able to find a copy around here to buy to read. Saw the movie though! You can start there. I hope you enjoy him.

Hope you're having a grand week!

    Cheers,
    Christine

Hi Pat, and thank you for the invitation. You're right, we do share quite a few books in common, including some of my favorites. I'm curious to know more about your book. I love all things Irish, and it sounds quite intriguing.

Thank you for the invite, Pat. I am going to get your book today if I can. My kittie is a friend magnet. Lots of my friends list are cat lovers. She is a mutt. Found her and her siblings in the train tunnel in our backyard layout. Was Captain Jack until we discovered she was really Captain Jackie, CJ for short. I look forward to our Shelfari friendship.

    Hi Pat,

Well, if you're a Roddy Doyle fan, you must have good taste! :-) My favourite of his books is Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha. But then, I haven't read The Barrytown Trilogy yet although I've been meaning to for years. I've seen all the movie versions of The Commitments, The Van and The Snapper and loved them! The Irish have THE most wonderful sense of humour! If you love Roddy Doyle, you might also really appreciate Patrick McCabe if you haven't already read him. Look forward to your recommendations!

    All the best,
    Christine
