Good read. A little repetitious. Provides good reasons for his optimism. Too techy at times, markets work differently often.

Page turner. Not a novel, a movie screenplay!

This is not so much a review of the book as a way of informing prospective students of why I choose a few chapters from it for my course on Competitive Marketing Strategy. Obviously there isn't yet a good book for that kind of course. The material in chapter 8 fits nicely into the way I like to discuss competitive pricing, with focus on price wars, their causes and ways to avoid them. Chapter 10 is short and I like that. I am not a fan of the Five Forces but the Value Net discussion is good, and the examples give a little guidance to basic understanding of industry analysis. Chapters 11-13 are somewhat general for my purpose but they provide a wealth of ideas that can be tuned to marketing strategy with some careful tinkering. I hope I succeed in that.

Of all the textbooks in marketing this is the one I like most. I have used it successfully for many years now. At 450 pages it is far and away the only textbook that students are likely to actaully read. I like the way the topics are organized, though chapters 7-13 follow, mistakenly in my opinion, the four Ps as a way to teach or learn marketing. The Illustrations enhance the readability of the book. I would cut down on some of them, there seem to be more of them than we need. This book fits well with my approach of teaching marketing in a way that students can learn to think for themselves, and acquire a few tools they can work with. Those I bring to class, in addition to the book.
