Have you tried any of PHilappa Gregory books? I like her Bolyn series, because I love reading about ancient English history. I particularly liked the Queen's Fool and the Constant Princess. Earthly Joys and Virgin Earth (two books in a series) are good too. A Respectable Trade was FASCINATING! But don't read her Wideacre series. I HATED all of the main characters in those books and many times debated whether I would finish each of the books because the characters were such despicable people.
