Aphreal

I'm a college science professor and a pretty voracious reader. Since I have to think so much in my professional life, a lot of my reading tends to be fantasy and sci-fi for the escapism.

I occassionally get cravings in the direction of pop science, religion, classic lit, etc. I've been enjoying historical fiction recently, too.... more »

Your response was terrific and very helpful - thanks! With so many great books out there, and free time so limited, I want to explore some new reading material that won't be a waste of time. My escapism is reading English humorists. I am an avid fan of Wodehouse, EF Benton, Roberston, etc. I also love to read Durrell, even tho' his books are not fiction they are incrediby funny.

Woo hoo!! I just went over and read it - very nice. Glad you liked it - great review btw! I'm working on reviewing Book 2 so it is on schedule for an April release.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble... any chance of you cutting and pasting that on amazon?

Not all the world is so "evolved" to know the greatness that is Shelfari ;-)

Again thanks for the review - If its alright with you I would like to post it on Michael's website as well?

Thank you so much, Sarah, for your response to my question about "Wicked". Looks like I will no longer be wasting my time on it since the majority of responses I got were "no". If I can ever help you with suggestions for books, let me know.

Aye Aphreal, I agree - the publisher gave me chapter 1 - I picked out a section I want to use - but it is "in the middle" of a .pdf for the whole book so I spent today - extracting the book from the .pdf into word so I can pick and choose what exceprts I use. It took a long time because of formatting issues.

It's so cool you'll be checking out Crown Conspiracy - I really would like to hear your opinions when you get done with it. They can definitely order a copy for you I've not foundn a Borders yet that its not in the distribution channel. Once you read it let me know where in the world you are located - I'm keeping a little track -- I have a copy being delivered in Germany in a few days for someone and one to Australlia - which I think is pretty cool.

Again - thanks for the input - I'll be posting a new excerpt for Book 1 - soon. And I hope the editors get Book 2 edited quickly so I can get an updated excerpt out for it. Man I wish I could edit - I think people who can just look at something and see the mistakes are worth their weight in gold.

    Hey Aph,
This has all been VERY helpful...So here is what I think.

    1) I should get a different "excerpt" for book 1 rather than starting with Chapter 1. - I'll start thinking about what that shoudl be - something that is good but doesn't have to know a lot of "before" to make it make sense.

    2) As to Chapter 1 of Book 2 - You have a great eye!! Yes that is a "pre-edit version" (But all I have at the moment so it was what I could use -- and wanted to show you a better representation of the series ;-). We just sent this book to the publisher On Monday of this week. We don't do the grammar, periods, etc. Neither one of us are editors we just mad sure all the plot elements were neatly stitched up and there were no holes etc now for the detail experts - God I lover editors and wish I could be one - but It is a talent I defintely do not have.

As to what you read..Ya I thought you would like Book 2 better - as you no doubt can tell the exchange there is directly related to what happened in book 1 but you don't HAVE to know that to make the scene work...it just makes it a bit more fun if you do.

And yes Archibald is unlikeable as he is suppose to be. He is a minor character that shows up only briefly in book 1 and does reappear later in the series but always in a peripheral way.

I'll check out Scott Lynch. Thanks for the recommned. And thanks once again for your time it was VERY helpful. If you ever do get around to picking up a copy I would love to hear what you think - as always good bad or indiffernt.

    Thanks again.

    Hey Apreal,

Lets try this...I made two webpages - with essentially the "blurb from the back of the books" so you have some context. Since you already read chapter 1 of book 1 just read the blurb. Then look at Book 2 blurb and then the sample champter on it since it has the main characters in them.

Well you are 100% correct - the first chapter does not have main characters at all - good thing since Archibald is such a you know what. The story is really about the thieves who stole the letters - and they later turn out to be in the one place at the wrong time.

I totally understand what you mean because the first chapter is a red herring. A perfectly reasonable review considering what you had to look at. Thanks again for the peek.

    Hey Aphreal,
Thanks for accepting the friend invite. Since you really liked the Potter books I wonder if you wouldn't mind looking at chapter 1 of my husband's fantasy series. He was a literary writer for a long time and stopped writing until he read Potter and then it inspired him to write something "fun and light". Its pure Mind Candy - nothing deep but I think it is a good story and would be interested in your opinion - good bad or indifferent.
