Hi all:

I am a Canadian gal, and because we spend so much of the year in a winter wonderland, have become an avid reader! Believe me, it's a survival tool as well as being lots of fun. I have been married for 28 years, have two beautiful daughters and one granddaughter who of course to Grandma is also beautiful!

Dear Denise: I’m an author from Massachusetts. My debut novel HUNTING THE KING was published in April. It has received high praise from Booklist, ForeWord Magazine and the Midwest Review. If you enjoy reading a good thriller, you may well like HUNTING. The story revolves around a charismatic young woman named Molly O’Dwyer. Molly was five years old when she witnessed her mother's death in a fire. She never knew her father. After her mother's death, she was raised on the campus of a Jesuit college in Boston. Now an archaeologist, she is recruited to participate on a dig in war torn Iraq. As a scientist she is compelled to know who or what is buried under the sands of ancient Babylon. As a loyal Catholic, she is scared that what she finds may have devastating consequences for her faith. There is an awesome YouTube book trailer well worth watching to give you an idea of the power of the book. Thanks.

I used to do these a lot when I was a kid, but I rarely got much back out of it. I still thought it was fun, though. I thought this one might be a bit easier to find people willing to do it, though, because it's for books...I thought I'd be able to find people here to help me out! I've found 4 so far... Thanks for getting back to me, though.

The snow is still on the ground, actually! I don't mind it (but then, I also don't drive). In fact, I prefer it to dead and brown! It's all melted off the streets and sidewalks, but there's still snow on the grass. It already seems late for the first snow to fall and stay for a while, and you still haven't had any! Wow! I remember - of the two years I lived in Edmonton - I was dreading winter (even though I grew up in Sask), but the first winter I was there, mostly it was nicer there than here in Calgary! I laughed a little about that.

Currently I'm reading a book called The History of Love : a Novel. It's o.k...not as good as I was hoping, but it's o.k. I'm actually participating in a game/challenge in one of my groups, so since Oct. 1, I've been spending as much of my free time as possible reading! The game only goes till Nov. 19, though, so I can go back to a more normal pace of reading after that.

Hi! How are you doing Denise? I just received a chain letter - remember those? This one is for a books, so you would mail a book (not a new one...one you already have) to the address on the letter, then forward the letter to 6 people with my address as the next one to mail a book to. Each of those 6 friends would pass the letter on to 6 people each and those people are supposed to mail you a book, so in the end you should end up with 36 books. Would you be interested?

No big deal if you aren't (and I'm not too worried if you can't find 6 people...if I don't get 36 books, that's better news for my bookshelves that don't have room anyway! I just want to find someone willing to mail a book to the previous person). Oh! I need to warn you, though, that the person you'd be mailing a book to is in the US. Please let me know if you're interested, but don't worry too much if you're not. Thanks!

Hi Friend! It's so good to hear from you - life gets so busy, I agree. Yes, I read about the movie coming out "Marley and Me" - I absolutely can't go
to that movie. Way too sad. I finally got up my nerve to read "The Story of Edward Sawtelle" and
it is honestly the very best book I have ever read -- ever! Unfortunately I cried for the longest time - But it was well worth reading aside from that! Let me know if you go see it once it comes out!! Take care and thanks for touching base with me!!

Denise, I'm not a published author yet. I'm still writing/editing books. I don't have an agent or publisher. I hope to be next year, if I ever get through editing. I would love to be your friend. I only have some nonfiction articles and poetry published. My latest reads were Forbidden by Suzanne Brockmann and Prior Bad Acts. Hope to hear from you.

Some of you have expressed interest in being able to post pics of Halloween costumes and such. Well, Katie, Diamondgirl, got the idea of starting up a Yahoo group for the Chiller Shelfari group. We could use it for things like posting possible new avatars that group members could vote on and for voting on monthly authors and such, since that's something we can't really do very easily here on Shelfari.

If you're interested in getting an invite to the new Yahoo group, please send Diamondgirl a private note with your e-mail address.

Don't worry, the Shelfari group isn't going anywhere, we just figured this would be an easier way to do some more things with the group.

What have I read lately? Well, looking back a bit - did you see my comment on I Am Hutterite in the group thread that was going? Since then... I don't think I've read anything by a Canadian author, but I am currently reading Organic Housekeeping and I think that everyone should read it. There are so many good tips and information about all the chemicals that people are unknowingly bringing into their houses.

Before that, I read The Other Boleyn Girl - really really good! (As is the movie.)

Looking back - before I Am Hutterite - for another Canadian author, I read Shake Hands With the Devil by Romeo Dallaire. He was a Canadian peacekeeper sent by the UN to Rwanda in the months leading up to the genocide. Very very good book, but so so frustrating to read what was going on and that it seemed no one at the UN was listening to Dallaire as he pleaded for more help. It has gotten me reading more about Rwanda from a bunch of different perspectives. Take a look at my shelf. I put a review for Dallaire's book, and there are two other books on my shelf since about Rwanda: Left to Tell, by a Tutsi woman who hid in a small bathroom, crammed with 6 other women for 3 months; and Eyewitness to a Genocide, which is a more academic look at the UN and their culture and what was going on with the organization around that time, so reasons why they didn't send as much help as they should have (he doesn't excuse it, he is trying to look objectively at the reasons).

So, if you're at all interesting in learning about the 1994 genocide, those are some good books. I would start with the Dallaire book first, though.
