Fun, informative look at the movies of Boston. I was really glad to see that this isn't just about the Hollywood movies that have shot in Boston, but also about the movies made by Bostonians for little or no money. There are some movies that I've seen over the years at places like the Brattle and the Museum of Fine Arts (The Blinking Madonna and Other Miracles, Lift) but also some that I've never seen that sound really interesting (The Dozens, The Dark End of the Street, Unfinished Symphony). In other words, there are more Boston movies than you'd ever think and this book seems to have them all. If you know Boston and like movies, this is for you. It's a real Bostonian's view on the movies.

    The Burglar

    by David Goodis
    • Rated 4 stars

Outstanding Goodis character-study/thriller focusing on the title character and his conflicted relationship with the 21-year-old woman he raised after her father--his mentor in thievery--died. She's both an albatross to him and someone for whom he feels desires he can't bring himself to act on. It's not as deliciously twisted as some of Jim Thompson's 1950s stuff, but it's still tasty, with a darker ending than the 1957 movie that cast Dan Duryea and Jaybe Mansfield in the leads.
