Atonement is a good place to start reading McEwan. It's an intelligent novel in more ways than one.

I loved the message of the book. His writing style is very descriptive rather than centered on dialogue. I would definitely give it a try.

Honestly, I just picked it up at home one night and finished it the next day, never read a thing from him before.

Wellllllllll...it's an easy read but I found myself having to put the book down because I was so angry with one of the characters. Not one of my favorite reads but I think you might as well give it a chance.

Given the other books on your shelf, I think you'll enjoy _Atonement_. I didn't see the movie, but folks I talked to who did were not impressed. The book however is fairly rich and captures characters in a way that is naturally impossible in the course of a two hour flick. You either love or loathe the people you meet in the story (and sometimes a little bit of both), and for me at least, I'm not sure the end resolves my feelings about whether "atonement" is achieved. Guess that might be the point.

My 24 yr old daughter highly suggested this book, saying it is more in depth than the movie and explains so much more than what the movie entailed. A tragedy that was written beautifully. I am looking forward to reading it after Pride and Prejudice.
