Sorry for the double post. Odd.
Stick with East of Eden. Pynchon is so overrated, at least to me. East of Eden if f-ing amazing. You know, I don't recall Notes from the Underground at all. I read it my first year in college (or thereabouts). Maybe I will reread it...
Don't do it. Read "The Crying of Lot 49" first and see if Pynchon is your bag. That is, BY FAR, his most readable novel. It will be a good litmus test. V, Gravity's Rainbow, etc. are WAY out there and tough to wade through.
Well, I have only been able to read the first few stories and I LOVE them so far... I had the flu earlier in the week and it rendered me totally useless. Nothing like being sick in 100 degree heat. I will get back to reading your stories when I am 100% starting tomorrow...
Okay... I'm off to read. Give me a few weeks so that I can enjoy them and not rush through them.
Go with what feels right. Problem solved.
I LOVED Play It As It Lays. I think you might like it, but I've been wrong with my recs to you in the past. It's a very quick read. Give it a go. It's definitely a modern classic. I read your story. Ten times better than the other one. Back on track!!
I have not. Dude, I am so stoked for your Drinkers story. Again, it so good.
I have been caught up with work.. Hardly got any time to read :(Hmmm I envy you!
Hi Mark.. How are you ? I just finished "raise high the roof beam, carpenters". Loved it! Following it up with Seymour and introduction.
Oh I totally understand. Sometimes you just want a simple, engaging story without the verbosity of Literature. Don't fret. Read what you want, when you want. I just started Blood Meridian by McCarthy and it's so strange and wonderful. It might be too esoteric for your current mood (he writes in a very peculiar syntax), but he is such a master craftsmen. Pick it up... if your dare!
I sent that link, cos in that work "stories within a story" concept is used. But the genre is fantasy.Anyways your work seems very challenging. Now I understand why it required more than 3 years :)I haven't been a voracious reader. Just began a year back after I started working. Its a pity that I didn't read when I had enough time on my hands. Started with Salinger recently. Loved Catcher in the Rye. Banana fish and Laughing man are also good. Haven't read Carver,Hemingway or Cheever. May be you can be my guide :)
Mark, I just remembered this.. If you have time, just go through this link [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikram_Aur_Betaal]]or this http://www.nalanda.nitc.ac.in/resources/english/etext-project/fairytales/vikram.pdfIt is very famous in India. Thought you might be interested.
You full time writer? And I'm slightly confused here. You mean linking a collection of short stories right? Sounds interesting! I like short stories from Russian authors. Even Salinger's also. But my favorite is "Just lather that's all" by Hernando Tellez.Yours?Yup never been to states. You've been to India?
Ya same here! What kinda stuff do you write?
No, I got At Heaven's Gate (or some similar title) but I will check out your rec... How's Absalom?
I've got a few more books on my queue, (just started Berlin Stories, then Blood Meridian by McCarthy, then the Kafka book that you lent me, then an Ishiguro novel called "Never Let Me Go" which is supposed to be AMAZING, and then, gulp, the final Harry Potter). Then back to good old Faulkner!! Keep my abreast on how the novel transpires for you...
Finally! I picked one you like! Haha.Henry Miller is my fav, so I am glad you like it...
It's been over ten years since I've read it, but I remember absolutely loving it...
