  • The Runaway King

Audio book. The sequel to 2012's "The False Prince" was filled with as much intrigue, adventure and humor as the first. And, there are pirates! Jaron has taken the throne, but his troubles are far from over. There is an assassination attempt, the threat of war and the fact that his own regents do not trust him. They want to appoint a steward to the throne until Jaron "comes of age" but Jaron is not happy with this decision. His choice is to try to destroy the pirates that threaten Carthya. Single- handedly. What could possibly go wrong?

The Monkeewrench crew are back again in one of my favorite mystery series. It opens with Grace MacBride in a sundress and sandals! That's more shocking than any of the murders that follows, of which there are many. Before you can say Monkeewrench, the crew along with detectives Magozzi and Rolseth are knee-deep in trying to find out who exactly is killing terrorists who aren't even on anyone's watch lists. Fun, fast-paced and well-written.

The Price of Freedom: How One Town Stood Up to Slavery

I ordered this one a while ago and just got around to reading it. This is an interesting and informative story about a town that refused to conform to the law about runaway slaves. It's an uplifting story and a good book to share as a read aloud.

3 1/2 stars. At first, I found the stream of consciousness style this was written in a bit off-putting, but I adjusted. The book also jumped around in time, and I'm not quite sure what that was about. We also didn't get a lot of world building, but I don't think that's necessarily a flaw--this felt like the first book in a series, and I like a story that allows the details to unfold organically. I think there were enough hints and glimpses here to keep a reader intrigued. But, what really worked for me here was the idea of this. What a fascinating premise. And Fia was such a great character. She is a girl who has been pushed to the very edge. A twitching, trust-no-one, lethal mess. Loved her.

I really like Jayne Ann Krentz-in all her various forms. Some stories are stronger than others, but I always enjoy the repartee between her characters.

  • Quintana of Charyn
    • Rated 5 stars

I don't think I've ever looked forward to a book more, or been sadder to finish it. The third book in the Lumatere Chronicles opens with everyone separated. Quintana, Queen of Charyn hides in a cave so that she can protect herself and the child she bears, Froi is recovering from arrow wounds, Queen Isaboe and Finnikin have words and he rides off in anger, and Lucian still grieves for Phaedra whom he believes to be dead. These are characters whom we have come to love dearly. Daring to hope that the story will come out well for them all seems pointless. Froi must find the woman he loves and find a way to save her, knowing that he may never stand beside her or claim the child that they created together. And he also must find a way to reunite the warring, divided Charyn. Finnikin must place his trust in a man who his wife tells her secrets to, someone he is finding it very hard to trust. And Lucian must learn to forgive Phaedra for her deception and to make the best decisions for himself and for his mountain. Along the way, there will be pain and there will be tragedy, but Marchetta brings the trilogy to a very satisfying end. Does it have to end? There are babies....

I had a little trouble with "Uncommon Criminals". I couldn't get into it, so I gave up on the book and listened to it--that worked for me. Here, there was no trouble. From the moment Hale left Kat hanging, I was hooked. I love Kat's family. I hope there are a hundred more aunts and random cousins that we haven't met, because every one is pitch perfect. I love the idea that family is so important, so central to their lives--no matter what they may do for a living. It was quite a contrast to Hale's family. I liked that we got to see how Hale and Kat met and that we got to see a bit more of Marcus, because he is Hale's family. Carter is letting these characters develop with each book, letting us get to know them a bit better each time. This time Hale was in the spotlight, and we got to see the real grief-stricken boy who hides under the suave facade. As always, there was plenty of action, humor and a great mystery to keep the reader engaged.

This series is one of my favorites. I love the premise of it, and things only get more interesting in the fourth installment. Violet is struggling with her new reality. She is not only being blackmailed by her therapist, but she must live with the constant music of her own imprint. The evidence that she too has killed. There is no way she can outrun herself, but one day she tries. And manages to stumble upon a gruesome murder scene with a puzzling twist--one of the bodies has no echo--something she has never seen before. When she receives her grandmother's journals from her mother, she is very hopeful of gaining insight--after all she inherited her ability from her grandmother. And she does learn much from the journals. She learns about the echo-less bodies and what causes them. She learns that her grandmother was part of a team of psychics who worked together. A team who she recognizes in an old picture. Violet realizes that her recruitment was no accident, nor was that of any of her teammates, but she has no idea what is in store for them. And she decides to share her deepest secret with Chelsea, her closest friend, but that just might be a fatal mistake.

I like Nora Roberts and I read all her books, but I admit I do find them a little formulaic. That's okay, I don't mind--I enjoy the ride, so to speak. I do find that I tend to enjoy the books from the male POV a bit more, because there is usually more humor. Not so much the case here, but still great characters and an interesting story.
