This started out fine, but was really disappointing in the end. I usually like her books a lot, but this book worked so hard to use all her research, and it was awfully sentimental, often crossing the line into cliche. It just didn't feel like a genuine account of real live people during the war. And some of the most interesting events in the books were either glossed over or skipped altogether. I think Berg was out of her element here. Try instead GARDENIAS by Faith Sullivan. (Or any of Faith Sullivan's books, actually.) Berg seems to reluctant to look at the harder edges, the uglier sides of life, and smooths too many things over. The characters end up seeming two-dimensional.

This book reminded me a lot of Ruth Rendell, such as Rendell's ADAM AND EVE AND PINCH ME. I love books that get inside the minds of people who think oddly, yet to them it makes perfect sense! Quite a different feel from Joss's PUCCINI'S GHOSTS, which I also enjoyed very much.
