Miriam Q

I'm a writer, a cat lover (this is a picture of my cat Cookie), movie lover and reader. I love British fiction, Booker Prize winners, contemporary American and Canadian novels, literature by Indian, Chinese and Japanese writers (in English). I also like to vary my reading with some mysteries and fantasy. I'm a young(ish) widow raising two kids...more »

A book swap - that's a great idea. Reading can be an expensive hobby if you don't have a library card or book loving friends! I've had to give away a lot of my books simply because I ran out of room to store them all. My book collection is starting to grow but they're mainly horror books.

We have tried a couple of group reads so far, though it's been a little slow to get off the ground, probably because of summer. Drop into the group discussions now and then and you'll see what people are talking about. Feel free to start your own discussions! I think Jon Hassler is one of my favorite Minnesota authors, by far. And I love all of his books. What have you been reading?

    Miriam,

Thanks for the welcome. I am anxious to get going in the group. What is your favorite book written by a MN author, or about Mn? I work right beside the Library and I just finished my last read and need to get a new book. Does this group have group reads and discussions about them?

Hi Miriam. Well, I do like to have a nice debate from time to time. Hope I do not come across as too unbearable, but I try to keep it polite and with some amount of humour. Thanks for your support in that discussion.

Yes, I read Solaris, and I find it quite fascinating, although more from a philosophical perspective than a scientific. Solaris in the book is just this ever-going project which never really leads forwards, just produces more questions. A bit like the project I am working on myself actually :) Which movie did you see by the way, the Soderbergh one or the 70s russian one by Tarkovsky ? I prefer the old one, I think it captures the book better also, there is something very eastern european about this story...

    Hi Mirium Q,

Very sorry for not getting back earlier (to a message you'd posted 5 months ago!) My feeble (though genuine) excuse is I don't log on to Shelfari very often.

I saw your (very impressive) shelf. I recently finished reading (unusual for me) a non-fiction: Mao: the Unkown Story, by Jung Chang ('Wild Swans') and her husband, Jon Ha;;iday (who, I think, is a professor of history). The authors have a very clear aim: to shatter every myth associated with the Chairman, and they do a demolition job on Mao's reputation with clinical efficiency. It is a bombshell of a book (banned in the People's republic of China).

I am currently back to what I like doing the most: reading fiction. I am reading 'The Masters' by C.P. Snow. Superbly written; enjoying it thoroughly.

Since the women in my book club are either teachers, librarians, or other professionals, all well read, I think they may like the Grave Tattoo. Thank you for your input.

Hey Judy - I am a huge fan of all of P.D. James' books, if you've never read her. I also like Elizabeth George, Laurie R. King and Val McDermid. Those would all be classified as mysteries I believe. Also, Carol Goodman writes very interesting arty suspense books. James, McDermid and George write about England; Laurie R. King does both U.S. and U.K. mysteries I believe, and Carol Goodman's books all seem to take place in New England (U.S.). Happy reading!
P.S. we also have an orange-and-white male, a black cat and a part lynx point Siamese who's very cute!

No problem. And just for the record, I didn't mean that they were right to do what they did, just that the punishment seemed harsh. Probation is actually a big deal. I think a fine and/or community service would have been appropriate.

They start on September 2nd, so yes a traditional schedule. I'm looking forward to having time to myself; I'm a writer and so I need lots of solitude!!!
Yeah, my daughter's already talking about college even though she'll be in 10th grade this year. She's interested in Oberlin, my alma mater. I have to remember to send them money when they ask for it from alumni . . .

Hi Miriam, how are you? Haven't talked to you in ages, but I do appreciate your Netflix notes. :-)

Are your kids on a traditional school schedule, or year-round? Have they started classes yet? My daughter starts back on Monday, and we'll be making a few college visits this year (I can't believe she's a junior already).

Anyway, take care and enjoy your weekend!
