Sorry I've been so slow in responding. Should you read Fingersmith ? It's a question. She's a good writer, for certain, and has really done her research on Victorian London. It did keep me reading quickly, as the plot takes unexpected twists and turns that I found fascinating. It reminds me of Charles Dickens - in a very updated form - inmore ways than one, but there are aspects of London's dark past that were taboo to explore in his time, such as child abuse, prostitution, etc. In short, it's a good book. My only hesitation is that it was like a long journey through a very dark, gloomy disused tunnel, and definitely not cheerful - so make sure you're in the mood ! By the way, there's a made-for-tv film available on dvd, which I understand is quite faithful to the book.
