I'm a middle school librarian, so I enjoy reading YA books as well as "big girl" books. I try to mix it up, alternating between fiction and nonfiction. I also love to listen to audio books as I walk with my dog. My absolute favorite genre is mystery, especially Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, or anything that takes place in an English... more »

Of course I knew the premise of the book before I read it, but it would have been interesting to have not known and to have let the horror of the situation unfold. I really enjoyed the point-of-view from which the story is told, and I loved jack's innocent voice. About 2/3 of the way through, there were some issues that didn't ring true for me, but as mentioning them here would give away too much of the plot, I've put my comments in the discussion section.

I was drawn to the character of Patty, and I was totally enthralled by the sections which centered around her. SPOILER ALERT. I liked the ending of the book, and although it may be argued that it was a bit schmaltzty, I appreciated how events came full circle.

I appreciate an engaging story or a good character study, and this book was both, with the bonus of a breathtaking setting. It wasn't perfect - there are a few details that aren't wrapped up tightly enough - but i enjoyed it.

I used this book to turor someone preparing for the ASVAB. There are some errors, but it's good practice.

I was under the mistaken impression that Tuppence and Tommy were later creations of Agatha Christie, but here they are, making their first appearance in AC's 2nd novel. In this book, they are not yet married, but are two old friends who run into each other after the Great War, both unemployed and in need of income. They decide to hire themselves out as "Young Adventurers," and adventure soon comes their way as they go in search of an American girl named Jane Finn, who disappeared shortly after escaping the LUSITANIA on a life boat. This book is a lot of fun, and although I adore Hercule Poirot, some of my favorite Christie works are her forays into adventure.

I enjoyed Bertinelli's first book LOSING IT, but many follow-up books like this one are written to capitalize on the success of a previous work, leavng the author scraping for material, resulting in a lot of minutia.

One of this summer's biggest movie blockbusters is CAPTAIN AMERICA, but this is the story a real life World War ll superhero. There is a section of the book in which three men stranded on a life raft are perpetually fighting off sharks, making JAWS seem tame by comparison. A must-read for book lovers, history buffs and book clubs.

This beautiful story takes place in a small German town during World War II. The narrator is Death, and what a remarkable narrator he is as he brings to life these marvelous characters: Liesel, the young "book thief" around whom the tale is centered; mama Rosa, the wardrobe-shaped woman with the big heart who shows her affection by berating those she loves; papa Hans, the accordian-playing painter, who loves his foster daughter as much as any true father could; Max, the hidden Jew; and Rudy, Liesel's best friend who idolizes Jesse Owens. I finished the audio version this morning during my daily stroll with my dog and found myself crying as I walked down the street.

Now that I am retired and have more time to read, I've decided to add more classics into the mix. (This extra reading time hasn't yet magically appeared, but I'm hopeful.) Although social mores have greatly changed since the early 19th Century, I've observed many parallels between the situation of the Dashwood sisters and today's society.

I'm on a mission to read every Agatha Christie book. Even though I read many of them in my youth, I've lost track of which ones I've read. This is AC's first book and one of her best. We are introduced to the fabulous Hercule Poirot, who was mostly likely inspired by Sherlock Holmes and in turn inspired the likes of TV sleuths Colombo and Monk. Poirot knows early on the identity of the murderer (or murderers, as we readers have come to realize that there may be more than one culprit), but as this is a true whodunit, we must wait until the end for the big reveal in order to allow Poirot enough time to gather enough evidence. Even though we pay close attention to the clues, realizing that things are not always what they seem and that meanings are easily misinterpreted, Christie still manages to surprise us.
