Probably something to do with Duchamp's "Readymades"...but yeah, it's weird, and it doesn't explain why they've chosen a wax-lips version of a urinal. The book's pretty great, though. There's a drawing of Karl Marx in an old-timey swimming costume inside. That alone is worth a read.
Have you read his other novel "Everything is illuminated"? I'm thinking about checking it out ...
