I visited England, well London about 3 years ago and completely fell in love. If I could pick up and move right now that's definitely where I would be headed too. I'm currently reading about the Duchess of Windsor.
Goodness, Amanda! What with the recent redesign of the site, I have failed to notice your friendship request. How could I decline when you have such an amazing hat? :-)
Darling!! I simply adore the chapeau...!
I am most pleased to be your friend, Amanda. I am rediscovering British literature thanks to the AA group. I just read The Remains of the Day and A Far Cry from Kensington. I'm still slogging my way through The Pickwick Papers (Dickens) which I hope to finish by year's end. I haven't been to Britain since 1974, but am planning a trip to Scotland and Ireland, unless the dollar weakens even more.
Such a chic chapeau!
What Mrs.McGillicuddy Saw is not one of Christie's best, is it? I remember thinking it vaguely tame.
No, it's a long-since-destroyed historical city. It was the capital of some of the south Indian kings, but I put it up because it rolls so deliciously off the tongue. Gangaikondacholapuram.Perhaps I should make literary references. I earlier claimed I lived in Blefuscu. Perhaps I should look back to all those bizarre British names for our cities in The Moonstone. I think I'll move to the city they called "Seringapatam".
Yes, I love Dame Agatha. I've read everything of hers at least once, and am starting over. This summer is too hot. I read about Miss Marple and her tweeds, and I think of the lovely English climate, and I can snuggle in and have tea and bread and butter, and yearn for the day cool enough we can all wear tweeds.
Pine-tasting did you say? Try some chilled retsina next time you're in Greece.
Well, I just said it was G&T because gin is British, and as Tinky would say, so U. It actually was vodka and tonic, made with Tito's vodka, and of course a fresh lime slice. When I was about 20, I liked sweet drinks, in fact Rum and Coca Cola (working for the Yankee dollar) was a favorite, along with Southern Comfort and Coca Cola. Southern Comfort is almost like syrup. Shortly after I turned 21 or 22, I stopped dating students, and started dating residents, interns, Air Force pilots, and other more sophisticated people, at least they seemed so to naive little me. The de rigueur drink became a dry martini, which certainly spoils your taste for sweet things. The sweetest thing I drink nowadays is an occasional White Russian (in tribute to the Big Liebowski) and a very rare Cosmopolitan, in tribute to S&TC. I even like my margaritas very tart, and so I usually squeeze extra lime into it. Sweet wine just doesn't go with dinner!
I saw Ivanhoe on your shelf, and it strikes me that every author who came after Scott for about a hundred years seems to have something complimentary to say about him. Austen, the Brontes, George Eliot and reams of others: do you think it might be something of a prerequisite to genius to like him?
Hello Amanda, We haven’t got a chance to chat since we became friends; sorry I haven’t been around my computer much lately. What were you studying in England? Literature I presume. I am quite jealous, I haven’t been to England since 2003, and that seems so long ago. I would love to hear about your adventures and mis-ventures (did I just make up a word?).
Yes, you do, and yes it will...don't be nervous. You don't have to partcipate much if you don't feel like it - it's just a big game of pretend.
His Lordship thinks you'll fit in like a pea in the pod, my dear.
Dear Lady Amanda,I have apprised His Lordship of your request to join Anglophiles Anonymous. He has perused your shelf, which he found empty, and respectfully requests some information about your reading -- likes, dislikes, major interests, etc. He would be most grateful.Your servant,Mrs. Danvers
I am envious of you then...as I've been to many places around the world, but not to England. Lucky you!
Well, then I'm glad you like mine. I made the picture in my living room with the blinds open enough to reflect on the marble top of the cocktail/coffee table. It sort of emphasizes the stripes in the glass. My niece combined my favorite colors when she made the glass.
Oh I'm sooo jealous! Sounds like you spent a good bit of time in England and enjoyed it greatly. Hope to hear more from you. :)
Thanks for the friend request. I have never been to England I would LOVE to go. That must have been an awesome experience.
Hi Amanda! Just wanted to welcome you the Across the pond and thanks for the friend invite! I'm very jealous you have been lucky enough to visit the UK! I'm still dreaming! You must tell us of your adventures!
