  • Broken
    • Rated 3 stars

Broken tells the story of Sadie, a 35 year old psychiatrist whose life is completely changed after her husband Adam is involved in a skiing accident and becomes a quadriplegic.

The first Friday of each month she goes to a bench near her workplace for lunch where Joe Wilder, a 35 year old divorce and family mediator, tells her a story of his sexual escapades with different women.

Lonely and sexless Sadie lives vicariously thought Joes words as she tries to maintain her sanity and preserve a marriage full of pain and anger. The seemingly emotional affair haunts Sadie whose entire life revolves around caring for her husband and working.

I did skip through most of Joe's sex stories simply because I found them to be too numerous and eventually boring. Barring that the story was a surprisingly moving romance and dealt - albeit quite lightly - with the grey area of fidelity and the weight of "till death do us part"

I found the ending to be realistic which is uncommon for romance books that tend to favour the "happily ever after" route. My only real criticism is in the characterization of some of the players namely Priscilla, who comes across as a text-book power hungry bitch with her obsessive list making, calorie counting and general contempt.

Not a bad read, quick and entertaining - 3/5

  • The Hunger Games

A good first book for the series, it was short and engaging. I did cry over Rue and the bread gift which is rare for me in a book.

Katniss is likable enough as a protagonist, she is strong, resourceful and adaptable. I like how her character grows as the games progressed and hopes she ends up with Peeta.

    A good, quick read 3/5

Having said that I have no intention of reading the others as I cannot conceive how the author can move forward from here without retracing her steps. I did check Amazon to see who Katniss ends up choosing and I am pleased at the choice, that is all I care about.

  • The Diary of a Nobody
    • Rated 3 stars

Written in the form of a journal, Diary of a Nobody follows the life of Mr. Charles Pooter. The book is supposed to be a comedy and in some ways it succeeds in other ways it fails.

In that way the book receives a 3/5, okay, had some laugh-out-loud moments but they were few and far in-between.

  • Rebecca
    • Rated 4 stars

A compelling tale of a young girl who marries a 42-year-old man she meets whilst employed as a bosom companion to a guest at the Monte Carlo. From there our un-named heroine is drawn into the dramatic life of the Manderley estate.

Shy and insecure she finds herself permanently in the shadow of her new husbands late wife, a woman renowed for her beauty, kindness, talent and ability to get along with anyone.

As the saying goes "not all that glitters is gold and not all that is gold glitters", the story takes a sudden turn as we see our young heroine grow, mature and face her fears and unraval the truth about Rebecca.

4/5 - Very good story, a great opening book for the new year.

The second installment to the tale and it is as captivating as the first book. I now have the urge to watch the movie adaptation again.

Fantastic, on to the third. 5/5

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Wow, I have no idea how this is popular, horrible writing, I hate both characters, the dialogue is repetitive and immature. 0.5/5 - This book makes me sad

  • Loving Lies
    • Rated 2 stars

The first scene involving anal was almost an exact copy of the same scene in "Sealed with a wish" The book yet again is a typical romance involving Southerners and was just ok. I didn't like reading the phrase "pleasure/pain" it seemed jarring for some reason

    2.5/5 - It was "ok"

  • The Fellowship of the Ring
    • Rated 5 stars

A true masterpiece, the book chronicles the first leg of the journey that Frodo takes to destroy the ring. As is usual for Tolkien the book is full of songs, most of which I skimmed through, but the few I read were nice but I must admit I am glad the movie adaptation, for the most part, left them out.
Reading this with renewed eyes and enjoying every second of it – 5/5 *favourited* A timeless classic.

    ARAGORN:
All that is gold does not glitter,
    Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
    A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king
