In a word, life changing. OK, two words.

Good airplane read. The action was good but character motivation was a little thin. But I suspect this is because I listened to the abridged version. A guys book.

Couldn't finish it. Not because of substance, but because of style. There were just too many adjectives. And too much repetition. It's as if the writer didn't think I would "get it" unless he clubbed me over the head with exclamation marks.

  • The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health
    • Rated 5 stars

How good have you designed yourself to feel at age 75? Age 35? How long have you designed yourself to live? If you have the slightest interest in these kinds of questions, you can't miss this book.

I wasn't completely surprised by the conclusions of The China Study and unless you've been living under a rock, you probably won't be either. But still, there's always something shocking about the truth when it really comes home.

What really DID surprise me though, was the sheer force of science behind what we've always suspected: that a plant-based diet is IN FACT the elixir of life--the closest thing to the fountain of youth you will find outside the world of myth.

As an MD, with both a Master's degree in Nutrition and a background in Adventist vegetarianism, I didn't think I needed to read this book. In fact, I put off reading it for two years, even though it was highly recommended to me by several people I respect. I was wrong. I should have snatched this thing off the shelf when it was in hardcover. Maybe then I could have spent the last two years feeling better than I have.

If you've ever felt adrift in our toxic food culture, this book may provide the moment of clarity you've been looking for. I can't recommend it highly enough.

  • The God Delusion
    • Rated 1 stars

The best thing about this book is the way it unconsciously exposes the barrenness and naked aggression of the "Bright" agenda.

The intellectual landscape is bleak and potentially terrifying--if you can believe it.

For a quick tour of hell, read this book.

  • Mythago Wood
    • Rated 5 stars

    From the editorial review:

"Myth and Terror in the Forest Deeps.

The mystery of Ryhope Wood, Britain's last fragment of primeval forest, consumed George Huxley's entire long life. Now, after his death, his sons have taken up his work. But what they discover is numinous and perilous beyond all expectation.

For the Wood, larger inside than out, is a labyrinth full of myths come to life, "mythagos"..."

This book was so much better than I ever expected. And it was recommend to me by a Tolkien scholar!

  • Spin
    • Rated 4 stars

"Everybody falls, and we all land somewhere..."

Like all the very best Sci-Fi literature, "Spin" is about neither Science nor Fiction, but about the human heart--and its search for significance in a Universe of overwhelming time and space.

This novel does everything well: character, dialog, plot, and premise, which is why it won the Hugo Award for best novel, 2006.

Without giving anything away, "The Spin" is a secular apocalypse that pushes humanity to the brink of spiritual collapse--and back again. It's quite a ride and a very thoughtful one.

Normally, I read anywhere from 3 to 5 books at a time, slowly, randomly, over a period of months. But I devoured "Spin" in 2 days. It was that good. Robert Wilson is a talent I'm looking forward to spending more time with. Happily, the sequel "Axis" is already on the shelves.

My recommendation? Pick a weekend and fall into this book. You will land in a world both stranger and more familiar than anything you ever imagined. Enjoy.

  • Firstlight: The Early Inspirational Writings of Sue Monk Kidd
    • Rated 4 stars

This book works well as a devotional. It's broken into 5-15 min sections gleaned from Kidd's years as a writer for Guideposts. There are enough gems here to give it 4 stars.

Sue Monk Kid has her finger on my pulse. Her spiritual journey resonates with me like a siren song. Maybe it's because she was a nurse before she became a writer, so our worlds often overlap in uncanny ways. Whatever it is, I'm hooked. This author is an unexpected jewel. I am somewhat awestruck that I have only recently stumbled onto her. I'm tempted to ask, "where has she been all my life?" But perhaps a better question is, "where have I been all my life?" When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
