Group work and collaboration in education are not just "feel good" activities but an important way of conducting business now and in the future. Did you know that the state of California is attempting to create wiki style textbooks? That companies such as Sun Microsystems and Proctor & Gamble post R&D problems online and pay cash rewards for solutions? That MIT has made all of its courses available online for free? That Second Life is actually a game in which 99% of the content is created by the users? That the new Google Chrome was financed to compete with Firefox, another free open source browser which Google also finances because they understand that true creativity comes with open sourcing? The future is all about matching up a specific problem with the uniquely qualified mind that can solve it. Lots of fascinating ideas here.

This book provides a fascinating view of the impending transition from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age (and the ensuing implications for education). According to Pink, the MFA is quickly becoming the new MBA, General Motors purports to be in the art business, and poets are in hot demand as CEO's. I heard about this fabulous book at John Mundorf's presentation at the Harvard UDL Institute and devoured it on the plane ride home.

I love these Usborne Internet-Linked books. They are interesting and well-written, and almost every page has a link to an internet site where kids can go to do more research or activities.

This was recommended by Karen West in SD 71. I plan to order it for the project.

We ordered this for the project because so many people had recommended it. Personally, I didn't like this book as much as his leadership books.

  • Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age: Universal Design for Learning
    • Rated 5 stars

This book, by Harvard educators David Rose and Anne Meyer, is the best place to begin learning about UDL. An interactive version is available online at the CAST website www.cast.org.

  • The Brain That Changes Itself
    • Rated 5 stars

This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. We got it for the project because it describes some of the implications of current brain research for students with autism and learning disabilities.
