Currently i teach elementary school and at a small private school. I will be teaching 3rd grade in the fall. I love children's literature. I've always felt it was some of the most imaginative work out there. A series of Unfortunate Events, Narnia Chronicles, Harry Potter, these really are some of my favorites. I frequently venture over to the young adults section for my books. I love really original stories that take you on an adventure, works written for "children" seem to be able to be wildly imaginative without being too weird:)
I have a history background and spent most of my time in Grad school studying church history, and I like good historical fiction. In the non fiction realm I like good historical biographies and good books on the sociopolitical or cultural environments of other countries. I am a traveler who hates being ignorant about the places I visit so I like to be well informed about places i go, and I just feel like I have a responsibility to better understand the world outside of the U.S.
My grown up favorites would be the Circle Trilogy by Ted Dekker ( a really imaginative writer), Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (a writer during colonialism that is amazingly perceptive about the whole venture and the nature of man) oh and we never leave the country without a lonely planet guidebook in hand :) They are great for independent travel. Oh and i love cookbooks! « less
