hey! i just saw you read "60million frenchmen." "french or foe" is another great book about the cultural differences between anglophones and the french.

Better than Starbucks is one of the fastest growing literary/social groups on Shelfari, with good reason. the membership (not so much me, the founder) is literate and diverse, and by and large very intelligent. The name of the group comes from an argument that led to the founding.

You can check out the following thread to understand a bit the naming:

    1) i am loving white teeth! the book is huge in scope addressing issues of race, gender, religion, war, assimilation, loneliness, suicide, etc. it spans twenty-five years and unfolds in a meandering, non-linear narrative that is set in north london. zadie smith does a really fantastic job of empathetically portraying the different experiences of immigrants and their children as they come to terms with a very different culture. an added bonus - it is hilarious! smith is so clever.

omg you go to ucsc? i am jealous! angela davis spoke at my school (macalester college) last semester and i read several of her books afterwards. she was my favorite profs graduate advisor! her lecture was amazing! she said beyonce was on her ipod haha. i wanted to know more about the movement for prison abolition after i heard her speak. her writing definitely made me question the validity of the prison system for its racism and classism and made me wonder about what an alternative would look like - perhaps starting with the loosening of laws on things like drugs, alcohol, and prostitution? and as public and private college tuition increases and becomes further out of reach for america's underclass, the government is funding more and more prison development which is so gross!! why fund prison when you can fund education? but whatevz, me n da government never get along. but i love my right to disagree. she is a great critical thinker and one of my favorite feminists. i really enjoyed both women, race, and class and are prisons obsolete and i plan to eventually read her book about the women of the blues. k i am done rambling now.

you should definitely take a class from her while you have the chance!

how is catch 22? i own it but i have never read it.

    goodnight.
