    "The Old Maid"

    I saw her in a Broadway car,
    The woman I might grow to be;
    I felt my lover look at her
    And then turn suddenly to me.
    Her hair was dull and drew no light,
    And yet its color was as mine;
    Her eyes were strangely like my eyes,
    Tho' love had never made them shine.

    Her body was a thing grown thin,
    Hungry for love that never came;
    Her soul was frozen in the dark,
    Unwarmed forever by love's flame.

    I felt my lover look at her
    And then turn suddenly to me
    His eyes were magic to defy
    The woman I shall never be.

    Day's End

    Oxen and sheep were brought back down
    Long ago, and bramble gates closed. Over
    Mountains and rivers, far from my old garden,
    A windswept moon rises into clear night.

    Springs trickle down dark cliffs, and autumn
    Dew fills ridgeline grasses. My hair seems
    Whiter in lamplight. The flame flickers
    Good fortune over and over -- and for what?

    Hi, Stephen--

    Just saw tonight's Lost episode and I'm saying Huh? How can Miles see himself as a baby when he's a grown man? Where did Farraday come from? And finally, how come if both were there before, especially Miles, how come he didn't succumb to the time shifts like Charlotte did? Mystery on top of mystery, no? It's late, just wanted to say hi and maybe hear your thoughts. Hope you're doing well.

    Cheers,
    Leslie

    Hey Stephen, I wonder what you think about Lowboy also....sounds good. Read a Japanese book in your honour yesterday, but it wasn't great, "The Housekeeper and the Professor"....math prof who only has 80 minutes of memory. Kind of like a non-violent "Memento". Hope you are well, and Happy First Day of Spring. Best, J

    Hi, Stephen--

    I'd really like to hear what you think about "Lowboy." I saw the NYT review which made me want to read it, until I saw that the rave review was from Charles Block who wrote "Beautiful Children," one of the more disappointing books I read last year. So I'd say I trust your instincts more than his and would love to hear your thoughts when you read it! "Lark and Termite" should be coming in any day at the library--excited to read that one. Hope all is well.

    Take, care,
    Leslie

    Hi Stephen. I was reading about the Berlin Book Fair, and it was mentioned that Cees Nooteboom was boogieing down at the party....strange gossip that I thought you would appreciate. Do you like "Lark and Termite", do you think it is Faulkneresque? Talk to you later, Best, Jane

    Hi there stephen! How do you like the hedgehog book, I remember reading a good review of it, and I keep walking by it in the local bookstore. Don't want too long a gap in talking to you so here is a tiny note. Hope all is well with you and yours, including those adorable little doggies. Best, Jane PS Do you think you will read Toni Morrison's latest? I see you liked Beloved.

    Hi, Stephen--

    Yesterday was just amazingly wonderful! Yes, we did make it in (got to the mall about 6) and walked up and up toward the Capitol until we found a jumbotron that seemed to be right (a crowd but not as many as were at the jumbotron a few hundred feet ahead). We heard and saw everything. It was really, really cold but we were bundled in layers and hiking boots and managed to stay semi-warm. Before the swearing in, we were treated to the entire Sunday Lincoln Memorial concert. Here we all were with our American flags singing "Shout" along with Garth Brooks. People as far as you could see. We were roughly directly across from the end of the Smithsonian castle and the Hirschorn Museum. I loved Aretha and the piece that Yo-Yo Ma and the others in the quartet. I was mightily impressed with Obama's address--for me, he set just the right tone. What did you think? The nightmare came after the swearing in, where this huge mob of people was trying to leave and kept being blocked by security. They just didn't know what to do with so many of us. Wound up doing what I swore I wouldn't do (we'd had dire warnings about this for weeks)--went on the Blue line and changed trains (more dire warnings) at Metro Center (dire warning to avoid Metro Center at all costs). No choice but to do this, after all the stations I thought we could get to were either closed or the way there was completely blocked. All worked beautifully, though. When we got to MC, our train was waiting right there and we were back in suburban Maryland lickety-split. Now I have a horrible cold, surprise, but a small price and wouldn't have missed this day for the world! Really looking forward to "Lost" tonight, as I know you are too!

    Take care, Stephen,
    Leslie

    Hi, Stephen--

    Not sure when I'll be writing again, after the 20th sometime probably. Excitement pretty high in this town. We're picking up my friend from NC tomorrow morning. Knitting away and listening to "The Given Day" right now--pretty good. How's "Beloved" coming? I'll tell you how things went--if we can just hear Obama's speech, I'll count the day a huge success! Cheers, Leslie

    Hi, Stephen--

    Both of the books you just added sound interesting. Could you let me know what you think of them? Also, have you read Cees Nooteboom's "Lost in Paradise?" I remember that you liked his/her? writing. My library has this one and I thought I'd add it to the stack, maybe try "Rituals" later. Hope you had a good new year--ours was wonderfully quiet. We're not partyers!

    Take care, Stephen--

    hi
    as long as I know in Auster's works form is some thing very important and I believe that you can not keep the form untouched in translation.That's my idea.

    hello
    Actually this Auster book is a Persian translation and not the English edition so I don't think my idea can be very accurate.My friend lent it to me last week,I just started reading and I like it.I'll tell you more when I'm finished with it.
