Welcome to my Shelfari page!
I am currently writing a biography of A'Lelia Walker, my great-grandmother and a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance.
My most recent book is On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker (2001 Scribner/Lisa Drew Books). I was blessed with a number of awards for this New York Times/Washington Post/Essence bestseller including a Hurston/Wright-Borders Books award finalist, the Letitia Woods Brown Best Book on Black Women's History from the Association of Black Women Historians, and a BCALA (Black Caucus of the American Library Association) Honor Book. On Her Own Ground was named a New York Times Notable Book and included on the Washington Post's Best Biographies list.
My first book, Madam C. J. Walker: Entrepreneur, was originally published by Chelsea House in 1991 as part of its Black Americans of Achievement Series. An extensively revised edition was published in July 2008 for Chelsea House's new owner, Facts on File.
Through these books about several generations of women in my family, I am trying to "re-tell" and expand our understanding of American history and the role women and African Americans have played since our arrival, as one historian has said, "before the Mayflower."
