    Hey,

Right now I teach 8th grade which is sort of on the fence right between elementary and high school. I think I chose that age because it is such a transitional time in a teen's life. Plus, you get to do some real critical thinking with them that I wasn't able to do when I student taught 2nd and 5th grade.

Yes indeed, determination is huge in teaching. There are many who try to fake it, but the kids see right through it.

Any good reads lately? I just finished "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" and absolutely loved it.

    Greetings,

I would have to say my two favorite places to travel are the Dominican Republic and Italy.

Actually, I just recently had my 3rd book published, "Roam Italy: A Teacher and His Students Take the Ultimate Class Trip." You could see more about it the site: www.theclassroombook.com

As for the DR, I will be going over there for one month this summer as part of a "social justice" tour.

And you - favorite places to travel?

I like Solaris a lot, just the kind of slow philosophical SF that is so hard to find today. I read some short story collection of him called the Star Diaries which was also not bad at all. Do you like Mr. Lem yourself ?

I just read a review you wrote on the book, East Wind, West Wind by Pearl Buck. Your comment about it not being very feminist.....?? You do realize this was written in 1930 and for a woman to agree to unbind her feet was Incredibly Feminist!!

hmmm, ur course on feminist theory sure sounds delectable!!;-) all i have ofg gender tehory this sem is some portions of this lauren berlant book, the queen of america goes to washington city..but thats far away...

i instantly recognise the social practice u referred to wrt spivak as taht of self-immolation or sati (suttee in english orthography), but have not read the essay u mention....i read translations of mahasveta devi in "in other worlds" by spivak, which included "draupadi"(a re-working of teh mahabharata myth by devi) and stanadayini, or the breast-giver....loved them both.....must read them in the bengali original sometime later, since i always try to get hold of the original if i know the language, and in this case, it is my mother tongue, so....;-)

id probably choose some po-co theory for my theory reqs, since i am a little conversant with gender theory, but will grab any course designed on gender theory if i get half a chance...

    regards,

Hi there, Nakupenda! I was just looking over the books. What a great combination and wide range of books we happen to have in common. Although there are only 8 some of them have been quite significant in my life - Things Fall Apart, Little Prince, The Curious Incident . . . etc. What fun!
