I'm the 30-something stay-at-home mother of 5, from tween to toddler. Reading is what we do around here. It's like breathing. My degree is in literature, but I don't consider myself an expert, and I certainly see no need to stick to the accepted classics. I read a little bit of everything. Yes, some of my favorite books are classics, but... more »

It's one of the first books I've read in a long time that I just didn't want to put down, and kept coming back to even when I was supposed to be doing other things. A great story coming together with the adventures of 3 bear cubs on mysterious journeys. It was well written, intriguing, and appropriately paced.

I've listened to this book on tape twice now, and I love it even more than I did the first time. I love the depth of characters and the engaging humor. I love the combination of epic struggle with the problems of every day life. Extremely well written and very entertaining, it certainly deserves its status as a beloved classic.

It's still one of my favorite books. I think it is exceptionally well written. Yes, there are similarities to other fantasy books, but in my opinion, all fantasy books have a tendency to play off each other. I love Sapphira's character, and I love that Eragon is a young boy trying to be a man with very few opportunities for guidance. It's a deep story with many unforeseen complexities.

I appreciate that this book was fully honest, but I thought it was not only weakly written, but a disturbing commentary on both Gen X and the plight of child stars in America. I hope great things for Melissa Gilbert, and acknowledge the journey she undertook to tell her story.

Not my favorite style, but it was well-written, humorous, and very realistic (even for a fairy tale). I loved the storyline of finding the strength and the goodness within ourselves and what we have. Will probably reread at some point in time.

  • The Private Diary of Mr. Darcy: A Novel
    • Rated 2 stars

An interesting take on Mr. Darcy's perspective, with a lot of plausible insights into the whys and wherefores of Darcy's behaviors (for example, the reason he was so aloof at the first assembly was because the news about Georgiana was so fresh). I thought the secondary story line of Darcy's friendship with Lord Byron was a little over the top, although the portrayal of Byron appears to contain some accuracy. I especially liked the take on Caroline Bingley as a creature deserving of some amount of sympathy, as well as the excess of Wickham's deviousness. All of that being said, it is still not one of my favorite Austen spinoffs, mainly because it makes an awful lot of assumptions.

Wasn't worth my time to finish.

Entertaining and thoughtful, I enjoyed this book. There WAS a bit too much emphasis on rape, sex, etc., for my tastes, but I did enjoy the story line and the quality of the writing.

    Darcy's Passions

Enjoyed the filling in of Austen's mysterious details, but thought the focus on passions at the end took things a little far. I did finish the book, but I'm not sure that it's a keeper.

  • Austenland: A Novel

Not my favorite Austen spin off. I did read it start to finish; I enjoyed Hale's writing style, but found the plot a little thin, and I didn't like getting whiplash at the end. Not something I need to reread or own.
