I'm the 30-something stay-at-home mother of 5, from tween to toddler. Reading is what we do around here. It's like breathing. My degree is in literature, but I don't consider myself an expert, and I certainly see no need to stick to the accepted classics. I read a little bit of everything. Yes, some of my favorite books are classics, but... more »

Still keeping up with all of them, and looking forward to the next.

I'm still hooked on the continuing story, and plan to read the next book in the series. Really love how the characters each have strengths and weaknesses, and how working together really pulls them all into one cohesive unit.

A very convincing read, and it's changed my opinions about several aspects of childbirth.

  • Birth Day: A Pediatrician Explores the Science, the History, and the Wonder of Childbirth

The book combines science and humor very well, and I certainly learned all sorts of things I didn't know about the history of childbirth.

I wasn't terribly fond of the writing style--I thought the background setup dragged on too long, but I couldn't argue with the compelling story line. As someone who is diagnosed with depression, I absolutely believe Shields' story and completely admire her for sharing it with those who will listen.

Lots of elements of standard fantasy literature, lots of elements unique to the book. The character Oliver deBurrows makes the entire set of books. Getting into the first book might be difficult, but once you're in, you're sucked in and must finish. Wasn't too fond of the ultimate ending, but it did make a certain amount of sense.

Harman tells her patients' stories vividly and with much sympathy. The story of her own life was candid. As much as it set my teeth on edge, one of my favorite aspects of the book was how not everything had fairy-tale endings, and the clear communication that many of these women, and especially Harman herself, are works in progress.

  • Pemberley Manor : Jane Austen's Pride and prejudice continued--

I liked it, and I will keep it on my shelf. Read it start to finish in a few days because the story drove me on. It's a lot more ... psychological than Austen's original work. I had trouble reconciling the way Darcy's character was played out with my perceptions of him from the first book; however I love what the author did with the character of Caroline Bingley. I was sad that the James Fitzwilliam storyline dropped off the radar; I liked what the author did with him to begin with. It's well written, and a decent read in its own right. But as always with Jane Austen's works, "often imitated but never duplicated."

Got some good ideas from this book, but essentially felt like it was another plea to eat naturally and organically.

  • Mansfield Park Revisited: A Jane Austen Entertainment

As a book in and of itself, I really enjoyed this. I liked how Susan was NOT Fanny, but her own unique person. I also felt like the ending crept up on me completely unexpectedly.

As a sequel to the original Mansfield Park, I don't know what to think. I defintely foresee a reread of that novel. I found myself a little disbelieving of the changes in people's characters, but perhaps I confuse the original book with the movie.
