I'm the 30-something stay-at-home mother of 5, from tween to toddler. Reading is what we do around here. It's like breathing. My degree is in literature, but I don't consider myself an expert, and I certainly see no need to stick to the accepted classics. I read a little bit of everything. Yes, some of my favorite books are classics, but... more »

I initially read this to be up on some of the YA lit out there, but I was quickly sucked into the plot. Although I arrived at the book's conclusion early on, I remained curious to see how it would all play out. Language was almost entirely clean; immorality, while present, was not explicit for the most part. I am eager to read more to see how the story continues to unfold.

I've read it, sort of. This is the second time I tried to read it, and the second time I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I think the writing is well done, and there's nothing particular to fault with the book; I just don't get into the storyline.

I really loved this book. I loved how she used a very real teenage girl to showcase a wide variety of issues, including imperialism, race, multiculturalism, and military culture. It's a completely made up world, and yet the emotions are so vibrant and realistic, and even in the face of unforgivable betrayal, there is hope and goodness. I am looking forward to reading more of Sharon Shinn.

It took me about 75 pages to stop wondering where the enduring Irish legend part began. Mostly until then it was merely about sex, and too much eroticism for my tastes. However, just when I was about to stop reading, the plot started unfolding, and I ended up finishing the book. I really enjoyed the eventual triumph over tragedy, although the tragedy really was ... well, tragic.

Much better than the last Kathy Reichs book I read, although the plot becomes a little transparent.

Not my favorite Jane Austen, but nowhere close to as sinister as some as the movies suggest.

A lot of compelling arguments, but ironically, it was way too medical and scientific for my tastes.

I'm still just really put out that it's Edward or nothing. Can't Jacob get a break already? It wasn't as intense the 2nd time around as the first.

Not as bad as Eldest, still not as good as Eragon. And what the heck happened to the TRILOGY? I was extremely disappointed that the series wasn't resolved yet. I do appreciate Eragon getting slightly more mature, given that he's had so much life experience now, but the war is dragging on and on and on....

This was the 2nd time I read it. Liked it better than the first time through, although I think it's still a poor imitation of Eragon. Still, I'm reading Brisingr to see what happens to all the characters.
