I'm the 30-something stay-at-home mother of 5, from tween to toddler. Reading is what we do around here. It's like breathing. My degree is in literature, but I don't consider myself an expert, and I certainly see no need to stick to the accepted classics. I read a little bit of everything. Yes, some of my favorite books are classics, but... more »

  • The Lace Makers of Glenmara: A Novel

While I agree that the storyline was compressed into an impossibly short time frame, the book was fantastic. The stories blended together perfectly into one big whole that resonated finely. I loved that the story combined the good and the bad, the old and the new, and that the ending while satisfying, wasn't necessarily a fairy tale ending.

An interesting look at depression, family, forgiveness, and healing. I read it all in a fairly short amount of time, found it dramatic but realistic. Loved the way everything came together in the end.

I love this book! Although the characters were a little predictable, it was just the pick me up I needed. I especially liked the dragons, and how each had a distinct personality.

Marriage, Africa, and lots of small choices, all with big consequences. The ending certainly gave me a lot to think about. Enjoyed the book, and will read more from this author.

Wow. You can't tell this from the book jacket, but it's the story of a 9-year-old boy and a WWII concentration camp. He's the commandant's son, and it's definitely a fresh perspective. There are reasons the book is in our library's teen section. It was intensely gripping, and shifts your universe a little bit.

Early in the book, I wasn't too impressed with the writing. However, the story engaged my attention. I really like how there aren't always perfect explanations or endings for things, just like in real life, but that there are still resolutions. And interesting way to learn about "history." I will probably continue reading the series in the hope that the books improve more.

At first I wasn't too sure about the free verse form or the rehashing of the story, but I LOVED this book. Read it in about two sittings in two days. It's the first book that has made me cry in a long while. I really liked how I could empathize with the main character's feelings, and how natural the progression in her feelings was. Wasn't too big a fan of the portrayal of Gwynevere. I also ended up really appreciated the free verse form--it reads like a story, but the verse form allows the author to communicate thoughts and startling ideas quite well.

I cared enough to finish the book, and loved the way things worked out in the end. However, it's just not my style of book--not a keeper, nor do I plan to read any sequels.

I didn't like this 2nd book as well as I did the first; nevertheless, I read it eagerly start to finish, and was extremely disappointed that the end leaves you hanging. Looking forward to the 3rd. Wish the characterization had been as memorable as in the first novel. Still some laugh-out-loud moments, though.

I spent a lot of time contemplating this book, trying to figure out what the message was. I'm curious to read more and find out how events pan out. I really liked Overstreet's writing, felt like it was carefully considered and not overstated.
