I m the 30-something stay-at-home mother of 6, from toddler to teen. Reading is what we do around here. It s like breathing. My degree is in literature, but I don t consider myself an expert, and I certainly see no need to stick to the accepted classics. I read a little bit of everything. Yes, some of my favorite books are classics, but... more »

King Hezekiah of Judah establishes his reign. He seeks to make many reforms in his country by restoring faith in and worship of Yahweh, and return prosperity to his people. He faces an impending Assyrian invasion.

The author draws in some touching side stories with the characters of Jerusha and Eliakim, as they, like King Hezekiah, have their faith tested and refined.

I miss the simple and straightforward faith that the character of Zechariah brought to the first book, but I think this lack brought forward how lost the main characters feel in this book. Other characters, like Hephizbah, Shebna, and Gedalia, brought a level of tension and suspense to the plot line.

While I felt a little bogged down in the middle, the last third of the book really picked up again, and I practically ran through it, hoping for the very best.

I really liked that though the book brought out some really horrific parts of the story, there was so much of human goodness and divine blessing to be found as well. Glad I took the time to finish this book.

Definitely unlike anything I've read in recent memory.

The Scorpio Races is the story of an island and its inhabitants--the people who live there and the mythical water horses--the capaill uisce. It's the story of a girl named Puck Connolly, who must save her home and her family, and a boy named Sean Kendrick, who must save his beloved companion and himself.

I love the feel of this book--love the lyrical writing, the awesome humor, the unique characters, and the lifelike tangle of relationships, motives, and life. I love that while there is indeed romance, it doesn't have to be the driving force of the whole novel. I love that it's about family and class and integrity and coming of age, and that it soars as a fantasy but stays grounded in human nature, without feeling overly-contrived.

    Great read.

Typical YA: an ordinary girl meets up with an extraordinary world (pixies, werepeople, etc.).

Lots of really compelling ideas, but as some of the other reviewers pointed out, it's a little empty. I kept hoping for so much more, and I think the potential's there.

So glad I took the time to reread this before I continued with the series. I love how Austin put the Biblical stories into their historical setting, and helped me to understand the people of the stories a little bit better. I love how the characters reveal themselves and shed light on the people around them. I love that this book can make you cry but still gives you great hope.

The fourth in this series. Simon, Jace, and Clary are back again, untangling some of their individual issues.

I'm glad there was more Simon. Tormented Jace is a bit much for me.

Ok, so I missed the first series, but you know what? This wasn't a bad book. The ending makes me a little crazy, but we'll have to see where the next one goes--looking for a little more resolution there.

On a side note, it seems like there was more bad language and more on-the-verge-of-sex scenes in this one. Made is seem less YA and more adult; I missed the YA.

  • The Minister's Daughter

Set in a 1600s English village, this is a story of the clash between the "Old Ways" and Puritanism which resulted in the witch hunts of the time period.

Several of the other reviewers used the words disturbing, creepy, mysterious, cool.... All apply. The blurring of the lines between fantasy and reality, old and new, truth and fiction, good and evil is educational in and of itself.

The characters are drawn individually--and amazingly. Your heart will break at Nell's innocence, cringe at Grace's maliciousness, not know what to do with Patience Madden, and applaud Mistress Bramlow's faith & loyalty. This book was very well done.

  • Moxy Maxwell Does Not Love Stuart Little
    • Rated 4 stars

This quick read is about 9 year old Moxy Maxwell, who hasn't read her assigned summer reading by the day before school starts. The book details all of her escapades as she repeatedly gets distracted from completing her assignment.

I loved the characters, especially Moxy and her mother, and I love how Moxy drags everybody else into it as well. I also really liked how the chapter titles flowed as a part of the narrative.

Not particularly my favorite kind of reading, but then I'm not a 9-year-old either. I'm pretty sure its intended audience would appreciate it more.

Liked it better than some of Heitzmann's others. Intense, but a little dragged out. A lot of different perspectives, and a lot of redemption eventually.
