That question was for you as well, Josh! Or anyone who cares to comment.
Trish caught my attention because I am feeling exactly the same about the group thing the last couple days.

I'm starting to feel the same way about one of the groups I'm in. I'm becoming more of a recluse as I get older but I still like to talk about books so I joined a very active group and found that it is entirely too chatty. I think I will remove myself from the group and do what I did last week when I asked my Friends who they thought the new voice of Egypt is now that Mahfouz has passed and am doing now: leaving aside popular fiction and focusing only on literary fiction, what makes some good books feel deeper and smarter than other good books? The writing might be as good, character development equal, but as I said about Toibin's Brooklyn it felt like there wasn't enough there, there.
What is your book blog, Trish?

What I like about this site is that you can make it as active or as quiet as you want. I started out joining groups and seeking out like-minded reader friends but soon just settled into a system of collecting books for my virtual bookshelf. I wanted to keep a record of all the books I read, and want to read, all with little blurbs and ratings and info and such. It's a great (quick) way to research books and authors and what people think about them. I still enjoy 'meeting' other readers and comparing bookshelves, and keeping my bookshelf up to date, but I'm not as active in the groups so much anymore. I have a book blog that has sort of turned into my own active little book group, and that keeps me busy enough. Good luck with your search. Or maybe start your own group/discussion? Or seperate book blog?

This is what is so great about this site! The first time I looked at Shelfari I checked the most popular books I thought this was not the site for me, but I looked again and found readers with books posted similar to the type I read. Since I joined I have discovered the Hungarian writer Sandor Marai, and Polish writers Pawel Huelle and Stefan Chwin. I was able to discuss Huelle with a young philosophy student who lives in Hungary and recommend his book Castorp to JWHenderson who I thought had read every book already in print! Mr Henderson recommended another Egyptian writer, Al Alaa Alway (I think that's right) he wrote The Yacoubian Building, so I'll get that book soon. I'll also look for that Hungarian collection one of your Friends mentioned in an earlier post to you.
I often wonder what great novel is out there, unread, I think a site like this, which is world-wide, makes it more likely to be discovered.
Go pick up The Karnak Cafe. They mentioned the "loathsome" Egyptian police again today on the news. I told my 14 yr-old son this was why we read, to know what people experience who live through events like we are witnessing on tv.

Hello, Josh, I wrote to ask if you had read Mahfouz and to ask who you thought would be turning the events in Cairo into a novel now that Mahfouz has passed but then I saw a post from one of your Friends about Hungarian lit. This is why I love this site: I have been looking for Hungarian lit. I just read Marai and loved it and wondered who else to read. Now I have a recommend from someone not officially a Friend.
Who do you think is the new voice of Eygptian literature?

The mash reviews are essential. I wish more people wrote them. The stars alone just aren't enough.

Thanks! Yes, it looks like we have a number of titles in common. It was funny to read your take on Eat Pray Love - I read it years ago when it first came out and loved it. But then I saw the movie recently and scanned the book again and thought, Huh . . . ? I'm glad it all worked out for this woman, but how self indulgent can you be? And, yeah, phony accents on an audiotape would have put me over the edge too.

I found your shelf by following "Lost in the Wild", and saw you had read it. We have a number of similar books, and I've enjoyed going through your shelf for more leads on other books. Keep up the good reading!

I am reading a very nice anthology of Hungarian lit called "An Island of Sound - Leopord V' published by Harvill. The only Hungarian authors that I have read are Sandor Marai and Imre Kertez. But it seems that there are many talented writers in Hungary that I haven't even heard about. It's very exciting to discover so many new authors - amazing!

Herzog has been on my reading list for a while. Have you finished reading it? How's it?

Do you read poetry? I don't. But I am making an effort to get started!

Thanks for the friendship request. I see we have three of the same books on our favorites (and it should be four, for I really should add McClean's novella "A River Runs Through It." I'm also glad to see someone else not entralled with "Eat, Love and Pray." I also listened to it and thought I wrote a review about her naval gazing and self-importance, but it looks like I didn't.
