Hello! My name is Maya and I am from Charleston, SC. Just finished my MLIS and work in a medical library. I love to read, especially African-American fiction (no urban lit), bios and true crime. I am a (double) graduate of the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!) and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (OOOO-OOOP) and Omega... more »

  • The Obamas
    • Rated 3 stars

If you want a good, detailed account of the Obamas, this is not the book for you. If you want gossip, this is the book for you. I didn't get the impression that Michelle was an "angry black woman' in the book, but I get that she eventually found her way in the White House and was quick to call out people who might not have had the President's best interest in mind. The book made the President aloof and out of touch, while his cabinet didn't get along (which is opposite of other accounts of the administration). I give this book three stars because it was easy to read.

I was reading this for my book club and really enjoyed it. Only thing was that the ending was a little abrupt for my tastes. I can see a possible sequel.

Awesome book in which Mark Whitaker talks about his biracial background. His father, the son of funeral home owners, was the first African-American to receive a PhD in politics from Princeton. His mother left France during World War II, while her father helped hid Jews from the Nazis. This book not only tells the story about his life, but the lives of his parents and how it shaped him. If you liked Dreams From My Father, you will also enjoy this book.

Paige has always been jealous of her big sister Camilie. Camilie has the perfect husband, the perfect kids and the big house, while Paige is single, has a condo and in debt. Paige has always felt that Camilie was treated as the "better child" by their parents while growing up Paige vows to get everything that her sister has, starting with her husband Pierce. Paige concocts a plan to take Pierce and hurt Camilie in the process.

This book kept me entertained and was easy to read. I wondered if Paige was related to Charlotte Black (LOL). The end does reveal the reasons why Paige felt the way she did.

I would recommend this book to people who are already fans of Kimberla.

Really enjoyed this book. It showed that Common is a man who has issues, flaws and continues to work on being a better son, father and human being. He talks about growing up in the South Side of Chicago, being raised by a single mother (until she married when he was 7) and his struggles finding his way in the music business. He also talked about his love life (Erykah, you were DEAD WRONG!) and being the best father he can be (from afar). I had a lot of respect for him before the book, but it has grown.

When I saw the opportunity to preview Silver Girl by Elin Hilderbrand, I decided to take a chance on it. First, I wanted to read something that was out of my comfort zone. I was also curious to read the book that caused Tayari Jones to change the name of her book. (And if you haven’t read Silver Sparrow, please go and read it ASAP. You will thank me for it.)

This story is about two friends, Meredith and Connie, who have both recently lost their husbands. Meredith was living the lap of luxury until her husband Fred becomes the fictional Bernie Madoff. With Fred serving the rest of his life in prison, Meredith must figure out how to move on while also being investigated for fraud.

Connie becomes a sort-of-savior to Meredith by taking her to Martha’s Vineyard for the summer. But Connie is going through her own grief with the death of her husband and her adult daughter not speaking to her.

Throughout this book, the women reexamine their lives through flashbacks, which include the death of Meredith’s father while in college and a falling-out among the friends. Meanwhile, they find love in unexpected places (one through a neighbor, while the other through their high school sweetheart – which happens to be the brother of one of the two friends).

This book was enjoyable and easy to read. Hilderbrand did a good job of describing the scenery, the people and the situations they were in. Also, you could relate to the friends’ situations and I found rooting for them.

I don’t know if I would read any of Hilderbrand’s other books, but I would recommend this to others.

I don't know what to say about Charlotte. And I'll just leave it at that.

  • Thriller: The Musical Life of Michael Jackson
    • Rated 0 stars

This book tries to focus more on the music, but does delve into Michael's personal life. Even though George is a respected writer and author, the editors should have done a better job proofing this (Michael was married to Lisa Marie, not Pricillia). But the book was a easy read.

  • Torn Between Two Lovers

I read Big Girls Do Cry for my book club and was more interested in the side story than I was the story about the sisters. This follows up the story between Lorraine, her husband, lover and her best (male) friend. I loved the ending!

The wife and her family was crazy! I feel bad for the victim and his family. I also feel bad for the children who were also affected by this.
