Hello! My name is Maya and I am from Charleston, SC. I work as a library assistant with hopes of becoming a librarian. I love to read, especially African-American fiction (no urban lit), bios and true crime. I am a graduate of the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!) and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (OOOO-OOOP) and... more »

  • Barack and Michelle : portrait of an American marriage
    • Rated 0 stars

I acutally struggled with this book about the First Couple. There were some things that I liked and some that I didn't. I did like that it was well written, dates were in ordered and it gives good detail in how their lives were, how they met, etc. What I didn't like was all the emphasis on Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers (especially with the author claiming he help write Dreams From My Father); trying to imply that a woman on Barack's US Senate campaign was getting too close to him (and that Michelle ran her off); Michelle's "attitude problem"; and saying that Barack still smokes (and if he does, who cares!). This book would be good for the causal reader, but people like me who admire and respect the First Family might want to pass on this.

  • Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women Write to the New First Lady (Excelsior Editions)

This was a very inspirational book! African-American women (and a few African women) share their pride, hopes and dreams by writing a letter to the First Lady. Some of the letters were poems, some talked about relatives who they wished they were here to see the moment President Obama was elected and some wrote on how they feel that Michelle is an inspiration to all. I could image Michelle reading the letters (and I hope she did). I recommend this book.

There are only two words to describe Zo: CLASS ACT!! He talked about his childhood and growing up in foster care (by choice!); going to Georgetown; and making it to the NBA--playing for the Hornets (when they were still in Charlotte), the Nets and the Heat. He also talked in depth about battling kidney disease, his transplant and recovery. He also discusses his outstanding charitable work and his walk with God. Even though his playing days may be over, he will continue to inspire more people through his work and this book. I've always admired him as a player, but I have even more respect for him after reading this book.

I bet that Michelle Obama, our First Lady to be, is a very interesting lady. There were times that this book was not as interesting. Since the author was not able to talk to Michelle, Barack or any of her family and friends (because the campaign turned her down), she had to rely on old neighbors, former coworkers and causal acquaintances to make this biography worthwhile. The author also interviewed Jesse Jackson (boo!) for this book. Old interviews, news stories and speeches were used as quotes from Michelle and those close to her to fill in this book. The author was trying to imply how Michelle's life might be like, but I want to know what Michelle's life IS like. The book was also weighed down with information that I did not care about. I hope that Michelle or someone who is able to talk to her will come out with a better biography than this one.

The plot sounded so good, but it turned out to be a wannabe Zane book without a plot and good editing. I was so turned off after the second chapter (involving a main character and her doctor) I gave up. I don't mind reading erotica, but don't tell me the book is one thing and it's another.

When I read this book last year, I didn't like it. I got a chance to meet Omar Tyree and he talked about how his life has changed since Flyy Girl and that he wants to change his writing style (to be more mainstream). I understand the book more now that he has said that, but it's still not one of my favorites from him.

  • Keep The Faith: A Memoir
    • Rated 0 stars

Faith is one of my favorite singers and when I found out that she was writing a memoir, I couldn't wait to read it. This book was worth the wait. She gives details of her life from the time she was a little girl growing up in Jersey, to when she met and married Big, to coping with his death and beyond. The book also addresses a lot of rumors that have plagued her career (Tupac, her relationship with Big's mother) and her relationships with many of the artists that were big in R&B and Hip-Hop in the 90s. I'm glad that she was able to share her story and I look forward to hearing more music from her in the future.

I enjoyed this book about convicted killer Ned Snellgrove who killed at least two women, almost killed one, and may have killed more. At exactly 500 pages, this was one of the longest True Crime books I've ever read. The author was very detailed with every aspect of Snellgrove's life, the victims' lives and the cases. If you don't have the patience for detailed TC books, this may not be the book for you.

This book was a combination of E. Lynn Harris mixed with some Secret Society and Urban Lit. The book was a pretty good and easy read. I do see a sequel to this in the future.

The book started out so good, but then turned out to be an OK book. It seemed like it could go one way, but winds up taking a different direction. But there were some scenes that left you shocked. Easy book to read.
