  • Four Quartets

I can recognize that this is beautiful poetry -- the language and the rhythm are undeniably so -- but I felt like I hardly understood its meaning! "The Dry Salvages" was my favorite of the four.

  • In Defense of Food

Loved the examination and critique of "nutritionism" in our culture. The few take-aways for me are 1) food is more than the sum of its parts, 2) there are only two food groups we should be worried about consuming or not consuming -- processed food and whole food and 3) the author's mantra: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Great advice to live by!

  • These Is My Words

Gripping story and an easy read. It's well written but sometimes I felt that, even in the midst of all the sorrow the main character sees in her life, it was a little overly romanticized. Some of the events between the main character and her love interest Jack felt a little contrived. They were always rescuing each other from really dangerous and dramatic situations. Other than that, great story and it made me feel a lot of sympathy for my ancestors who settled the Arizona territories.

  • French Women Don't Get Fat
    • Rated 4 stars

Good, quick read about the French way of life that naturally causes women to be less obsessed with diets. I picked up a few principles I think I'll adopt -- moderation, not going extreme or denying myself a true pleasure, eating good quality chocolate, and compensating for special splurges.

Wow! A beautifully written, well-organized book that examines many of the problems facing women worldwide. I found it extremely inspiring -- full of personal stories of women who have risen above their circumstances to improve their lives and change the lives of those around them. For as much evil and oppression that exists in the world today, there is SO much good! This book has motivated me to get more involved in women's issues, both here and abroad..

  • Parenting With Love and Logic

Short & sweet -- gives you some practical tools for using "thinking" words vs. "fighting words" with children -- enabling them to make their own choices, learn from their mistakes, and grow up to be responsible, respectful adults.

Disturbing, but gripping, tale. The main character is so depraved, so pathetic, and yet you can't help but feel sorry for him in the end at how in love he was with a young woman he never truly "had."

  • Cinderella Ate My Daughter
    • Rated 4 stars

Made me think about what types of media and products I will expose Cami to. I am committed to helping her learn to dissect advertising, fairy tales, and subliminal messages on her own!

"It would be disingenuous to claim that Disney Princess diapers or Ty Girlz or Hannah Montana or Twilight or the latest Shakira video or a Facebook account is inherently harmful. Each is, however, a cog in the round-the-cloth, all-pervasive media machine aimed at our daughters -- and at us -- from womb to tomb; one that, again and again, presents femininity as performance, sexuality as performance, identity as performance, and each of those traits as available for a price. It tells girls that how you look is more important than how you feel. More than that, it tells them that how you look is how you feel, as well as who you are. Meanwhile, the notion that we parents are sold, that our children are "growing up faster" than previous generations, that they are more mature and sophisticated in their tastes, more savvy in their consumption, and there is nothing we can (or need) do about it is -- what is the technical term again? -- oh yes: a load of crap." • Think

Made me think about how much time I waste in a given day doing activities that do not challenge my mind, enrich my life, or change my thinking. I need to incorporate more time for reading into my daily life!

If ever I were to write a book, this is the kind of book I would write. Warm, witty, engaging, educational. I loved this story about a woman who discovered more about herself and more about human nature as she set out to learn more about a group of people who faced the German occupation of the Channel Islands in WWII.
