Hi ya all! I am married and the mother of a grade schooler. I am employed in the retail field and in my free time ( what's that???) I enjoy camping, running, and just hanging with the family.

I have a wide variety of tastes in books, ranging from urban fantasy, mystery, contemporary, YA, and just about any and all in between!

I really enjoyed The Road. As sad and bleak as it was, I thought it was hopeful in a very strange way. His writing style takes a little getting used to, but I got over it quickly. Be aware there is some graphic horror imagery. Let me know if you liked it.

I read "The Haunting" a long time ago. I remember that I liked it. Right now I'm between books. Just finished "One Step over the Border" by Stephen Bly. It was just okay. Too much telling and now enough showing. Think I'll read a Tess Gerritson thriller next.

Yes, I liked Essay too. I felt at the end that she was the essence of a Sawtelle dog--one that is able to think and make decisions independent of humans. And I was thankful at the end that Forte was still around--during the story I was afraid that horrible Claude had run him off.
My final take on the Sawtelle dogs was their intelligience. I think they were bred to take commands beyond simple obdience to the think it through stage, and with Essay the breed reached its apex. Edgar saw that, too. Could be they had wolf mix, but seems like Sawtelles said that wasn't good. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong.
Yes, having Almondine and Edgar reunite at the end was sweet. I liked that. The scene in the barnyard at the end with Glen being blinded was amazing also.
I liked Henry. If I were to write a happy ending, Henry and Trudy would be together with Edgar and all the dogs. "Not ordinary!"
Haven't heard of "The Art of Racing in the Rain." Will look for it.

I'm happy you liked it. I wish the ending had been different--I really didn't want Edgar to die. And I absolutely wept and hated it when Almondine went looking for him and was hit by the truck. :-( Oh, my gosh! I still cringe when I think about it.
The writing was fantastic--really drew me in. Claude was so loathsome to me that toward the end I just skimmed the parts where he was influencing the deputy against Edgar. I simply couldn't stand him and didn't even want to read about him.
What did you think about Trudy taking up with Claude so soon after her husband died?
I, too, wonder whether non-dog people would love the story as much? I enjoyed every word about the dog training, and the animal's different personalities. Wasn't that a clever touch the way Edgar named the dogs from the dictionary?
Well, I said at the outset I'd been dying to talk to someone about this book, so thanks for reading with me!

I'm so glad you're enjoying the book! I especially loved the dogs--mine got lots of extra attention and love while I read this book! So interesting the way the author took us into the dog's minds. I totally loved Almondine! Still do, and I finished the book two weeks ago! She's real to me. The sign of a talented author, I'd say.

Hi Vicki, Glad to add you to my friends list. After you finish reading "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" I hope you'll let me know what you thought of it. I'm dying to communicate with someone who's read the book. Do you like dogs? I love them, which is part of the reason I picked up "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" in the first place. The dog parts did not disappoint.

Hopefully I will finish it this week. I have to go to Mississippi today, to stay a few days with my cousin. She just found out she has breast cancer, and is not dealing with it well just yet. I have decided to go through the book again after I finish it and highlight the parts that I want to comment on. I did not realize the controversy about the book until after I bought it and started reading it. Then I went back and read several pages of posts on it. It is fiction, but a lot of people seem to be upset that it strays from the Bible when it comes to portraying God.
